___bluebull A Special Friends retreat will be held at Mount Lebanon Baptist Encampment in Cedar Hill Oct. 5-6. The retreat is for the mentally disabled 12 years of age or older, their parents and chaperones, and workers with the mentally disabled. Campers will participate

THE YOUTH CHOIR of First Church in Sulphur Springs recently presented concerts of spiritual and patriotic music at several New York City locations, including the Statue of Liberty, the Central Park bandshell, the United Nations building, Battery Park and the Brooklyn Tabernacle. Bibles also were made available to those in the audience in either English or Spanish. The choir is directed by Fred Randles.

Conference topics for parents include helping children deal with anger and depression, financial security and employment of the mentally challenged. Conference topics for teachers will include social and church behavior for the mentally challenged and how to deal with situations that are upsetting and embarrassing. As a special feature Nancy Burks, a ventriloquist, musician and storyteller, will perform. A fellowship luncheon will be held at noon Friday and will cost $6 for each person in addition to the retreat cost. Reservations are required. Registration will begin at 2:30 p.m. Friday, and the first session will begin at 4 p.m. Scholarships are available. Deadline for reservations is Sept. 21. ___bluebull First Church in Sanderson will hold a Bible conference Sept. 8-12, with Robert Kramer of Allentown, Pa., the primary teacher. ___bluebull The churches of Trinity River Association will sponsor an "On Mission Celebration" Sept. 8-12. It will begin at 5 p.m. Saturday at First Church in Liberty. Twenty-three missionaries from all parts of the world will have displays and be ready to share their experiences. The Texas Baptist disaster relief team will cook a meal of fried fish, fries, cole slaw and hush puppies for $4. There will also be a combined worship service and a parade of flags. From Sunday through Wednesday, the missionaries will be at different churches within the association. For more information, call (936) 336-9232.
___bluebull Holly Brook Church in Hawkins will hold dedication services for its new worship center Sept. 9 at 3 p.m. The days of celebration will be Sept. 10-12 at 7 p.m. Paul Powell, dean of Truett Seminary in Waco, and Andrea Holcek, pianist from First Church in Tyler, will be the featured guests on Monday. Charles Wade, executive director of the Baptist General Convention of Texas, will be the guest speaker on Tuesday, and Dale Johnson of Dallas will be featured on the church's new organ. The Two Tenors from Irving will present a concert on Wednesday. The first service was held in the building Aug. 26. Larry Taylor is pastor.
___bluebull First Church of Urbandale in Dallas will celebrate 68 years of ministry with a special service and luncheon Sept. 16.
___bluebull Tony Campolo, nationally known social commentator and a former spiritual adviser to President Bill Clinton, will speak at Cliff Temple Church in Dallas Sept. 23 and 24. He will be speaking on integrating the church into the community. He will speak at 6 p.m. Sunday and 7 p.m. Monday. Tickets are free, but required for admission. ___Deaths
___bluebull Claude Miller, July 18 in Bakersfield, Calif. Miller was a pastor for more than 53 years, serving in Texas, Oregon and California. He also worked with Mission Service Corps of the Southern Baptist Convention for six years. He is survived by his wife of 27 years, Jean; daughters, Nancie, Sue, Patsy, Judie, Tina and Tammy; son, Randall; brother, Tommy; and a number of grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
___bluebull Fay Routh, 90, Aug. 9 in Austin. Her father-in-law, Eugene Routh, was editor of the Baptist Standard from 1912 to 1926. She was a member of First Church in Austin. She was preceded in death by her husband, Ross; one brother and one grandchild. She is survived by sons Rob, Donald, Alan and Jon; 12 grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; and sister, Deane Winters.
___bluebull Juanita Manning, 78, Aug. 15 in Rockdale. A member of First Church in Bryan, she was the wife of Vaughn Manning, former director of missions for Creath-Brazos and El Paso associations. She is survived by her husband; daughters Charlotte Stephenson and Trink Ruthven; son, Jim; brother, Lamar Adams; six grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren.
