728 Texans went to New Orleans ___ATLANTA--Texans comprised the seventh-largest contingent of messengers who convened at this year's Southern Baptist Convention annual meeting in New Orleans. ___Of 9,584 total messengers, 728 (7.60 percent) were from Texas, reported SBC Registration Secretary Lee Porter of Atlanta. ___Two hundred seventy-seven Texas churches sent at least one messenger to the SBC meeting, Porter added. ___The list of churches does not differentiate between affiliation with the Baptist General Convention of Texas and the Southern Baptists of Texas Convention, which split from the BGCT in 1998 to form a closer alliance with the SBC. ___However, of 13 Texas churches that sent at least eight messengers to the annual meeting, three are uniquely aligned with SBTC, five are dually aligned with both Texas conventions and five are not listed as having any affiliation with SBTC, according to the new convention's website. ___Georgia led all states in messenger count, with 949, Porter said. Tennessee was second, with 859, and North Carolina came in third, with 792. ___Others in the top 10 were Mississippi, 770; Alabama, 744; Florida, 740; Texas, 728; Louisiana, 707; South Carolina, 557; and Kentucky 434. ___This year's SBC registration total was the second-lowest in 25 years, behind the 8,582 messengers registered in Salt Lake City in 1998. The total was the lowest for a Southern city since 1949, when 9,393 messengers met in Oklahoma City. ___The record was set in Dallas in 1985, with 45,519 messengers.
