___ Pastor mauled by bear. Longtime Alaska pastor Johnny McCoy is recovering at a Fairbanks hospital after being mauled by a grizzly bear Sept. 4. McCoy, 52, pastor of First Baptist Church of North Pole, Alaska, underwent more than six hours of surgery for multiple injuries he sustained after he and a hunting partner happened upon a female grizzly bear protective of her two cubs. McCoy's injuries included numerous bites to his head, both arms and hands; a nearly severed right ear; a left eye dislodged from its socket; a rip to his forehead open enough to show his skull; two compound fractures of his right arm; and a broken left wrist.
___ IMB names development director. William Hoffman Jr. has been named director of development efforts for the Southern Baptist International Mission Board in Richmond, Va. Hoffman previously was director of annual and planned giving at Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary in Fort Worth. He also is a former Texas pastor, having served First Baptist Church of Yantis and New Life Baptist Church of Cooper.
___ LifeWay address changing. Effective Oct. 1, the primary mailing address for LifeWay Christian Resources of the Southern Baptist Convention will become One LifeWay Plaza, Nashville, Tenn. 37234. The change accompanies construction of a new main entrance and parking garage for LifeWay, scheduled for completion in late 2002. The main entrance and visitor parking will be north of the present entrance, off Ninth Avenue near Church Street.
___ Virginia treasurer dies. Nat Kellum, treasurer and director of business management for the Baptist General Association of Virginia for 19 years, died Sept. 12 of an apparent heart attack at his home in Ashland, Va. He was 56 years old. A former two-term trustee of the Southern Baptist Foreign Mission Board in the 1980s, Kellum was chairman of_deacons at Cool Springs Baptist Church in Mechanicsville, Va.
___ Virginia executive nominated. John Upton Jr., a well-known Virginia Baptist missions leader, will be nominated to become executive director of the Baptist General Association of Virginia and the Virginia Baptist Mission Board. Upton, 48, is expected to be elected by the Mission Board at its Oct. 9-10 meeting in Richmond and by messengers to the BGAV annual meeting Nov. 8-9. Upton is a former associate pastor of Lake Shore Baptist Church in Waco.
