___ HBTS gets grant. CIOS foundation of Waco has awarded a $162,000 start-up "grant/loan" to Hispanic Baptist Theological School in San Antonio, according to HBTS President Albert Reyes. The funds will be used to provide scholarship assistance to Baptists who enter as full-time freshmen students this fall. Full tuition will be covered the first year, and half the tuition will be paid the second year. Reyes believes the grant will allow the school to enroll 100 new students in the next two years.
___ HSU enrollment 2,276. Hardin-Simmons University's fall enrollment is 2,276 and includes gains in new undergraduate students. Shane Davidson, associate vice president for enrollment services, reported 614 new students, a 2.7 percent increase over last fall. While this year's overall enrollment is slightly lower than last fall's, specific gains were made in first-time transfer students, Davidson said. Specific gains in the academic disciplines include the Master of Business Administration program, the master's degree in counseling and human development, the master's degree in sports and recreation management and the new bachelor's degree in athletic training. Gains in total number of undergraduate majors also were reported in the Irvin School of Education and the Logsdon School of Theology.
___ UMHB enrollment gains. The University of Mary Hardin-Baylor reports a record enrollment of 2,624 students this fall, up from 2,590 students the same time last fall. This marks a record enrollment for 16 of the last 17 years. The freshman class is slightly smaller this year due to tighter admission standards, reported Vice President Steve Theodore.
___ UMHB alumni honor 4 families. Although it is not unusual for someone to establish an endowed scholarship in honor or memory of a loved one, it is unusual for an endowed scholarship to be established to honor four families. This is exactly what Paul and Ruth Mahtani Dearing did when they established the Dearing-Read-Longshore-Mahtani Presidential Endowed Scholarship at the University of Mary Hardin-Baylor. "We are able to give this scholarship because each of these families contributed to our lives by the investment they made in us," said Paul Dearing, a family doctor and surgeon in Burley, Idaho.
___ Wayland enrollment up 11 percent. Wayland Baptist University experienced an 11 percent growth in enrollment for the fall semester. A total of 5,781 students are enrolled on the 12 campuses that comprise the Wayland University system, up from 5,198 last fall. In Plainview, 1,019 students are enrolled in graduate and undergraduate courses, about the same as last year. Growth continues at Wayland's external campuses, which cater primarily to adult students returning to earn a degree or complete one. At those 11 campuses, the student population grew by 13.8 percent this fall. Enrollment at Wayland's other campuses in Texas includes 177 in Amarillo, 691 in Lubbock, 1,400 in San Antonio and 598 in Wichita Falls.
___ ETBU enrollment gains. Fall enrollment at East Texas Baptist University is 1,509, an increase of 107 students over last year. While all campus programs showed increases, the largest gains were in music and athletic programs, university officials said. This is the second year of a revived football program and the first year of a marching band program.
