Missions Commission OKs changes
___By Ken Camp
___Texas Baptist Communications
___Messengers to the Baptist General Convention of Texas, rather than members of the State Missions Commission, will elect future trustees of Hispanic Baptist Theological School in San Antonio and Valley Baptist Missions/Education Center in Harlingen as a result of Aug. 23 commission action.
___The State Missions Commission approved restated articles of incorporation and bylaws for both institutions. Trustees of the institutions already had approved the governing documents.
___Under the new guiding documents, both Hispanic Baptist Theological School and Valley Baptist Missions/Education Center will relate to the convention's Christian Education Coordinating Board rather than the State Missions Commission.
___Trustees for both institutions are required to be members of churches cooperating with the BGCT.
___In other business, the commission approved the recommendations of a study committee regarding future direction of the State Missions Commission, in light of organizational restructuring in the BGCT.
___The study committee recommended the continuing existence of the commission because it "provides a unique and significant role" in Texas Baptist life.
___The commission will continue to be comprised of 18 commissioners nominated and approved by the Executive Board, with 15 representing geographic zones and three additional at-large commissioners to ensure ethnic representation.
___The commission re-elected Randall Hager, a school administrator from Amarillo, as chairman. Jack Frost of Odessa was elected vice chairman, and Betty Ross Preisler of Wharton was elected secretary.
