___ Jesse Fletcher, president emeritus of Hardin-Simmons University, has been named Citizen of the Year by the Abilene Chamber of Commerce. Fletcher, who served as president of the university from 1977 to 1991 and as chancellor until being named president emeritus in June 2001, was recognized at the organization's annual banquet Oct. 14. Oliver North was the featured speaker.

___ First Church in Madisonville, 125th, Oct. 27. As a part of the celebration, former pastors and their families will be recognized during the morning service. Living former pastors are W.W. Baker, Lamar Cooper, J.W.L. Adams and Charles Higgs. A luncheon will follow the morning service. The church will be recognized as a Madison County historic site with a plaque at a 2 p.m. dedication service. A reception will be held at 2:30 p.m. at the Madisonville Kimbro Center. ___ First Church in De Leon, 125th, Nov. 17. Dan Kent, a former pastor and a retired professor at Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary, will be the guest speaker. A barbecue dinner and time of remembrance will follow the morning service. Mark Roath is pastor.
___ Lake Highlands Church in Dallas, 100th, March 8-9, 2003. The church initially was called South Park Mission and then Forest Avenue Church prior to being given its current name. An open house on Saturday and a catered lunch are among the activities planned. Mark Farish is pastor.

___ Thomas Potter, after eight years as pastor of First Church in Kildare and 48 years in the ministry, Oct. 31. He has been pastor of churches throughout Texas and in Colorado. For the 125th anniverary of the Kildare Church, he wrote a history called "Faithful in East Texas." ___ Ernest Shepherd, 89, in Dallas Sept. 30. He had been pastor of churches in Markley, Bedias, Fairfield, Wilson, Snyder and Muleshoe, as well as in Broomfield, Colo.; and Great Falls, Mont. He also was senior adult minister in Brownfield. He is survived by his wife, Johnnie; sons, David, James and Paul; 10 grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren.
