___ Pastor writes on Halloween. Ken Lovelace, pastor of Grand View Baptist Church in Mesquite, has written a brochure explaining his faith-based opposition to observing Halloween. The six-page brochure traces the history of the holiday and draws on biblical references to warn of dangers associated with Halloween. Lovelace also provides suggestions for alternative celebrations and observances. ___ Kiser named associate vp at HSU. Dorothy Kiser has been named associate vice president for student records and registration at Hardin-Simmons University. Kiser has been registrar since 1988 and is a 22-year administrative staff member at the university. Kiser is a member of Pioneer Drive Baptist Church in Abilene.
___ ETBU celebrates homecoming. East Texas Baptist University celebrated its annual homecoming Oct. 11-12. Senior Rhonda Parker, a speech communications major from Pasadena, was named homecoming queen, and junior Josh Jordan, a religion major from Sulphur Springs, was named homecoming king.
___ Sharp to lead HSU board. Joe Sharp of Granbury is the new chairman of the 42-member board of trustees at Hardin-Simmons University. He was elected Oct. 18 at the board's annual fall meeting. Sharp has been serving as vice chairman and succeeds Richard "Dick" Brooks, also of Granbury. Other officers for the year are James Parker of Abilene, vice chairman; Fred Aurbach of Dallas, vice chairman and assistant secretary; and Inez Kelley of Houston, re-elected secretary.
___ The cans keep coming. South Texas Children's Home received 34,169 cans and products as result of a contest in the Coastal Plains Baptist Area. San Felipe Baptist Association brought in 15,572 cans for the children's home's annual Kans for Kids roundup. Colorado Baptist Association took the lead, however, with 18,597. The contest between the two associations was reported in the Baptist Standard's July 29 issue. Harold Sellers, director of missions for both associations, had issued the challenge. First Baptist Church of Wharton, part of Colorado Association, brought in the most cans, 6,254. The can-do leader in San Felipe Association was First Baptist Church of Rosenberg, with 5,984 cans.
___ Baylor Alumni Association honors four. The Baylor University Alumni Association presented the W.R. White Meritorious Service Award Oct. 25 to Gloriana Simmons Parchman and Leo Parchman Jr. of Dallas, Donell Phillips Teaff of Waco and Fred Cameron of Houston. The Parchmans, members of First Baptist Church of Richardson, endowed the Parchman Lectures, which bring highly respected theologians to campus each year. Teaff, a member of First Baptist Church of Waco, is the wife of former Baylor football coach Grant Teaff and has been active in various Baylor civic concerns. Cameron, a member of Tallowood Baptist Church in Houston, is an attorney and has led in university development and alumni efforts.
