___ Texas Baptist Historical Society to meet. The fall meeting of the Texas Baptist Historical Society is scheduled for Nov. 11 at 10 a.m. at First Baptist Church of Waco. The luncheon meeting will include the election of officers, recognition of 2002 history award winners and a presentation by Royce Measures on Abner Smith and early Primitive Texas Baptists. ___ HSU homecoming to end with worship. Hardin-Simmons University's Oct. 18-20 homecoming will end with a Sunday morning worship service in Logsdon Chapel. The service will be led by Paul Gomez of North Richland Hills and Tony Garrett of Tyler, along with trumpeter Stacy Blair of Euless, organist John Campbell of Abilene, pianist Keith Whitmore of Shawnee, Okla., and soprano Teresa Mixon Gomez of North Richland Hills. The homecoming also will feature a reunion of the Pioneer Drive Baptist Church Sonshine People college ensemble.
___ Youth essay contest open. Entries are sought for the the Baptist Way Youth Essay Contest for high school sophomores, juniors and seniors. The Baptist General Convention of Texas sponsors the contest for youth who are active in BGCT churches. Essays should cover traditional Baptist topics such as authority of the Bible, soul competency or security of the believer. The first place winner receives $500, while second and third place receive $300 and $200, respectively. ___ ETBU enrollment high. East Texas Baptist University has a fall enrollment of 1,496, the second-largest in the school's history.
___ Bakers honored at ETBU. East Texas Baptist University honored Marshall residents Ed and Delores Baker Sept. 21 for funding Baker Boulevard, a new road that allows for additional parking space at ETBU's football stadium and paved access to the university's new soccer facility.
___ HSU names communications director. Joella Michael has been named to the newly created position of communications director at Hardin-Simmons University. She will provide leadership to the university's marketing and communications initiatives and strategies, including administrative oversight of the university's special events, sports information and media relations. She is the daughter of missionary parents, Jerry and Kay Hayes. She attended Abilene High School and received a bachelor of business administration degree from Abilene Christian University.
___ HSU names homecoming honorees. Hardin-Simmons University will honor David "Scotty" Holland of Houston as recipient of the John Keeter Jr. Alumni Service Award during fall homecoming festivities. Holland, a retired Pennzoil geologist, and his wife, Jacque, have endowed the Holland School of Sciences and Mathematics. Also, three graduates will receive Distinguished Alumni Awards--Terry DuBose of Little Rock, Ark., the first director of the diagnostic medical sonography program at the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences; retired Army Col. Jack Howard Grogan Jr., who recently completed his military career as conductor of the U.S. Army Field Band in Washington, D.C.; and Gene Wofford, pastor, denominational leader and professor at Houston Baptist University.
___ Anderson & Saunders named VPs at HBU. Don Anderson has been named vice president for development at Houston Baptist University, and Sharon Saunders has been named vice president for marketing. Anderson will supervise the offices of alumni, planned giving, stewardship, church giving, major gifts, donor research and donor records management. Since 1999, Anderson has been alumni director. Saunders will manage admissions, institutional scholarships, publications, and marketing and communications. She has served the university since 1981.
___ Streams of Christianity explored. Houston Baptist University will present a symposium on five "streams" of Christianity Oct. 17 at 6 p.m. Each of five speakers will answer three questions: How would you define your tradition? What are your major strengths and potential pitfalls? In light of experience, how would you counsel others to experience your tradition? Speakers include Bob Phillips, pastor of Encourager Church; Jeanie Miley, author and inspirational speaker; Duane Brooks, pastor of Tallowood Baptist Church; Jeremiah Booker, director of Shalom Zone Ministries; and Frank Rossi, chancellor of the Catholic Diocese of Galveston-Houston.
___ Prospective students invited to HBU. Houston Baptist University plans two events for prospective students this fall. Scholarship Scoops Oct. 22 at 7 p.m. will provide an overview of financial aid and scholarship opportunities. ___ Social work conference offered. Social work professionals are invited to further their education at the annual Hand in Hand Conference April 6-8 at Baylor University's Truett Theological Seminary. The conference will combine with the university's Dyer Spring Workshop and Chafin Lecture. Featured speakers are Wendy Wright, professor at Creighton University in Omaha, Neb.; J. Alfred Smith, pastor of Allen Temple Baptist Church in Oakland, Calif.; and Terry York, professor at Truett. The event is sponsored by the Baptist General Convention of Texas.
