Appeal made to preserve history
___WACO--Help churches preserve their history before it is lost forever, the director of the Texas Baptist Historical Collection urged the Texas Baptist Historical Society.
___Speaking at the annual meeting of the historical society Nov. 11, Alan Lefever urged society members to promote services provided by his office.
___"We need you to serve as our agents out there in the field," he said. "It is imperative we preserve the history that is being lost every year."
___While requests for historical documentation have increased, an alarming number of churches allow their information to fall into disarray, he warned.
___"Because of recent cutbacks, we are unable to afford the type of publicity required to inform churches of the need for this information. Publicity is our biggest weapon, and we can't afford to purchase it," Lefever said.
___The society's 2002 Church History Writing Awards went to:
___bluebull Thomas Potter, a layman at First Baptist Church of Kildare, for "Faithful in East Texas, the History of Kildare."
___bluebull First Baptist Church of Austin for "Into His Marvelous Light," accepted by Jack Goodman on behalf of the church.
___bluebull Terry Lee Rioux, a Louisiana teacher, for "G.W. Carroll."
___Special recognition was given to Bill Pitts, 20-year editor of the society journals. He was given leather-bound copies of past journals and a plaque.
___Royce Measures, presiding president of the society, rounded out the program with an overview of Abner Smith and early Primitive Baptists in Texas. As founder of the first Baptist church in Texas, Smith proved to be an important figure in the forming of Texas Baptists of today.
___A common theme resonated throughout the society meeting, and it was summed up by Measures' closing comments: "Those who do not know history are bound to repeat it."
