___ Baylor names provost. Baylor University President Robert Sloan has appointed David Lyle Jeffrey, distinguished professor of literature and humanities, as provost and vice president for academic affairs. Jeffrey, who currently serves as senior vice provost, will succeed Donald Schmeltekopf, who is retiring. As the university's chief academic officer, Jeffrey will be responsible for recruitment and retention of faculty. Jeffrey joined the Baylor faculty in the fall of 2000 after spending more than two decades at the University of Ottawa. A 1965 graduate of Wheaton College, Jeffrey earned his master's degree and doctorate in English from Princeton University. He is a noted scholar in medieval studies and the Bible and literature. He is the author or editor of 12 books. He and his wife, Katherine, are members of Highland Baptist Church in Waco.
___ Adams scholarship established at HSU. A newly endowed scholarship to benefit students preparing for full-time Christian ministry has been established at Hardin-Simmons University. The Russell and Velma Lee Adams scholarship was created by Adams of Carthage, Mo., a 1948 graduate, in memory of his late wife, Velma. The scholarship will be awarded with a priority given to children of missionaries. The Adamses were public school teachers in Texas, Colorado and Arkansas. While teaching, they worked with Mexican missions in Texas and helped start three new churches in Pueblo, Colo.
___ Leech named Miss MHB. Leslie Leech of Belton was crowned Miss Mary Hardin-Baylor Nov. 9. The senior religion major represented the senior class and was crowned by last year's winner, Amber Grimes of Lufkin. Her platform emphasized missions. Twenty-four women competed in the two-day event. First runner-up was Lydia Kosinar of Longview; second runner-up was Amanda Day of Conroe; third runner-up was Beth Oberhoff of Sugarland; and fourth runner-up was Jessica Hartsfield of Austin.
___ Shafer to receive DBU's Perry Award. Dallas Baptist University will honor George Shafer, president and director of Industrial Properties Corp., during its 15th annual Russell Perry Free Enterprise Dinner Dec. 2. The dinner is hosted by DBU in conjunction with the Russell Perry Free Enterprise Committee and co-sponsored by the Dallas Morning News. Shafer has helped develop the 1,500-acre Trinity Industrial District in Dallas. He serves as a trustee of Prestonwood Baptist Church and director of Prestonwood Foundation.
___ Wayland honors five alumni. The Association of Former Students at Wayland Baptist University presented Distinguished Alumni awards to five people Nov. 22. Honorees
___were Jim McKinley of Louisville, Ky.; Robert Mathis of Fort Worth; Roland Saul of Hereford; Kyle Reese of San Angelo; and Lucian Morehead of Plainview. McKinley is a retired Southern Baptist missionary to Bangladesh. Mathis is director of institutional research and assessment and professor of administration at Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary. Saul is a judge in the 222nd judicial district court. Reese is pastor of First Baptist Church of San Angelo. Morehead is an attorney and benefactor to the university.
___ Howard Payne receives scholarship funding. Howard Payne University recently received the remaining funds from one of the largest gifts in its 113-year history. The Juett and Pearl Churchill Harris estate initially provided $1 million for student scholarships. The total amount of the gift now has achieved more than $2 million in value, making it the largest contribution to the university from a single estate.
___ UMHB nursing gets another approval. The University of Mary Hardin-Baylor Scott & White School of Nursing has been awarded accreditation from the Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education. The Commission of Collegiate Nursing Education is a self-assessment accreditation program in which the faculty and staff ensure the quality and integrity of the program. The UMHB School of Nursing also holds accreditations with the Board of Nurse Examiners of the State of Texas and the National League for Nursing Accreditation Commission.
