Shepherd for a day.
___ Jeff Rees (right), pastor of Garden Oaks Baptist Church in Houston, brought a shepherd's crook to illustrate a message on Jesus, the Good Shepherd, and his concern for all people when the church recently moved its Sunday evening activities to a nearby YMCA. The church set up an outdoor stage (above, left) where a variety of bands--bluegrass, adult contemporary, youth and Hispanic--played. Church members grilled hotdogs and hamburgers for more than 400 people who attended. The youth performed Christian drama. Local businesses contributed 50 items for a prize giveaway, and the church offered pony rides and large inflatible games for children. Rees also baptized three people in the YMCA pool. Church leaders billed the event as a way to get out of the church house and into their community. |
