Baptist Men respond in Corpus Christi
___Texas Baptist Men is ministering in the aftermath of several tornadoes that knocked out half of Corpus Christi's power for four days and ripped the roof off a Baptist church building.
___Tornadoes hit the coastal city Oct. 24 and left it vulnerable to the torrential rains that followed. Tornado and water damage left many homes unusable. At least 45 families were forced from their homes, and portions of the city remained under water Oct. 30.
___Among those who felt the impact of the tornadoes and rain was Nueva Esperanza Iglesia Bautista. A tornado ripped off much of the roof of the church's education building, and the subsequent rain severely damaged the structure.
___The building suffered thousands of dollars in damages, leaving the congregation with no useable space for Sunday School.
___The Texas Baptist Men South Texas unit cooked 2,000 meals Oct. 29 at the National Guard Armory, and the child-care unit began offering short-term care as parents assess damage and prepare to file for federal disaster relief, said Ray King, who is directing the child-care unit.
___At least one middle school was closed due to the damage, and some parents do not have an option for child care. Texas Baptist Men are bringing Christian hope and help to these people, a staff member said.
___Volunteers for the child-care unit are needed this week. For more information, call (940) 627-4161 or (940) 393-0881.
