___ Wake-up Waco wants workers. Wake-Up Waco coordinators have openings for volunteers from around Texas to help with the 11-day ministry and evangelism event planned in conjunction with the Baptist General Convention of Texas annual session. Volunteers will assist local churches with prayer, block parties and inner-city evangelism. Last year's pre-convention evangelism activities resulted in more than 1,100 faith professions in Christ and distribution of thousands of tracts and New Testaments. ___ Tucker to lead HSU alumni. Becky Allred Tucker of Abilene will serve as president of the Hardin-Simmons University Alumni Association board of directors for 2003. She will serve with Ronnie Kidd of Abilene, president-elect; Saundra Rosengrants Ford of Lubbock, vice president for chapters; Linda Ulmer Perkins of Abilene, vice president for events; Evelyn Stacy Cogdill of Weatherford, vice president for homecoming; Deborah Presswood Ashmore of Abilene, vice president for special projects; Martha Nollner Lacewell of Abilene, chaplain; and Sharon Etheredge Cutbirth of Abilene, secretary. of Music. He has been serving as interim dean since June 1. Hager, who joined the HSU faculty in 1973, earned the bachelor of music degree from HSU in 1967 and the master of music degree in 1971 from North Texas State University.
___ DBU honors Dobson. Shirley Dobson, chair of the National Day of Prayer and wife of the founder of Focus on the Family, received an honorary doctor of humanities degree during Dallas Baptist University's fall convocation Oct. 18. Dobson addressed students in the morning chapel service, challenging them to give what they have now to God, their world and the lives of others.
___ Texas Baptist Men to meet. Texas Baptist Men will hold its annual meeting with the theme "We Believe Men Can Make a Difference" Nov. 12 at Latham Springs Baptist Encampment in Aquilla. The organization will conduct business, including electing officers, starting at 1:30 p.m. Sid Woodruff of LifeWay Christian Resources will speak on the meeting's theme. Leo Smith, president of Texas Baptist Men, will recognize outstanding work over the past year and present the Parabaloni Award. A video presentation will feature the organization's work.
___ Texas WMU to meet. Woman's Missionary Union of Texas seeks to embrace the state and the world at its annual meeting Nov. 12 at Columbus Avenue Baptist Church in Waco. The meeting will begin at 1:20 p.m. and feature Baptist World Alliance President Billy Kim of South Korea and the Far East Broadcasting Company's Children's Choir. The organization also will elect officers. Other scheduled speakers include David Bolen, minister of music at First Baptist Church in Waco; Diana Garland, chair of the School of Social Work at Baylor University; and Kathy Hillman, Texas WMU president, who will speak to the meeting's theme, "Embrace Texas ... Embrace the World."
___ Wayland trustees meet. During their October meeting, Wayland Baptist University trustees honored local donors who helped fund a new entrance to the university. Those recognized included Harry and Annette Igo, the family of the late Bobby James and Plainview Mayor Lloyd Woods. During their meetings, trustees approved changes to the bylaws, replacing the term "chancellor" with "president" to reflect the organizational changes approved in May. Delbert McDougal of Lubbock will continue as trustee chairman, with Bruce Julian of Perryton as vice chairman, Sally Shaw of Lockney as secretary and Connie McMillian of Lubbock as assistant secretary.
___ Baylor Medical breaks ground for senior center. Baylor Medical Center held a groundbreaking Oct. 31 for a new senior center at Fair Park in Dallas. Baylor has partnered with Bank of America and SouthFair Community Development Corp. to build the facility, which will be the first new office building in the Grand Avenue corridor in more than 20 years. Services will focus on preventive healthcare for senior adults.
___ Baylor University approves construction. Baylor University regents set tuition rates for next year and approved funding for construction of the university's first new campus residential facility in nearly 40 years. Tuition for undergraduate students entering Baylor in fall 2003 will be $16,750 annually, a 6.7 percent increase. The university moved to a flat-rate tuition this fall. Continuing students who enrolled prior to fall 2002 will experience a 5 percent increase in tuition. Tuition for students in Baylor's Truett Theological Seminary, which is established separate from the university fees, will increase 6.9 percent. The first phase of new campus housing, called the North Village, will be located between the Rogers Engineering and Computer Science Building and the new Dutton Avenue parking/ office facility. The $30 million structure will house 600 students in suite-style units.
___ Playwright to teach Baylor students. Pulitzer Prize-winning playwright Horton Foote has been named visiting distinguished dramatist at Baylor University. He will work with theater students Nov. 3-8 and then return to campus for additional activities, including a public lecture, in the spring. The Wharton native received his first Academy Award in 1962 for the screenplay of "To Kill a Mockingbird" and his second in 1983 for "Tender Mercies." He received the Pulitzer Prize for "The Young Man from Atlanta." Beginning in 2004, Baylor will sponsor an annual Horton Foote Playwrights Festival and present an annual award to an American playwright in Foote's name.
___ Baylor Alumni Association honors five. The Baylor University Alumni Association honored five graduates as Outstanding Young Alumni Oct. 25: Joseph Armes, executive vice president of Southwest Sports Group in Dallas; Lori Watts Hiron, vice president and director of public affairs for Citigroup in Kansas City; John Meredith, president and general counsel of Aspiring Youth of Houston and Aspiring Youth of America; Eugene Roehlkepartain, director of family and congregation initiatives for the Search Institute in Minneapolis; and Melissa Rogers, executive director of the Pew Forum on Religion and Public Life in Washington, D.C.
