___ HSU students give grants. Three non-profit organizations in Abilene will receive $500 apiece from profits made by a group of Hardin-Simmons University business students. Students in an "Introductory to Business" course taught by Coleman Patterson, made profits of $1,500 this fall on class-related projects. The profit will be divided equally among the Salvation Army, Abilene Baptist Association social ministries and the Bair Foundation. This is the third semester for the activity. ___ Hillcrest announces land purchase. Hillcrest Baptist Medical Center has purchased a 36-acre tract adjacent to US Hwy. 84 in Woodway for erection of a new inpatient health-care facility. Planning for the new facility is projected to last well into 2003. Meanwhile, Hillcrest is preparing a major renovation of the emergency department and two other units at its main Waco location.
___ Missions perspectives offered. "Perspectives on the World Christian Movement," a 15-week course on "world Christian discipleship," will be offered in churches across Texas this spring. The course focuses on missions from four perspectives--biblical, historical, cultural and strategic. It is endorsed by both the Southern Baptist International Mission Board and the Cooperative Baptist Fellowship. ___ President takes the stage. Houston Baptist University President Doug Hodo and his wife, Sadie, played the parts of Nathan and Hannah, the innkeepers, in the university's student-directed Christmas pageant. "A Man Named Jesus" was written by HBU junior J.D. Humber and produced with a voluntary cast of students, faculty and staff. The three-act play covered the life of Jesus from birth to death and resurrection.
___ Thorn named president emeritus. Dallas Baptist University trustees have named Bill Thorn president emeritus. Thorn, who was president from 1975 to 1979, is widely used banquet speaker, giving more than 300 presentations annually to civic, religious, educational and business groups. He and his wife, Jessie, reside in San Angelo.
___ Wayland graduates 50. Wayland Baptist University awarded degrees to 50 students during a winter commencement ceremony_Dec. 14. Claude Cone, executive director of the Baptist Convention of New Mexico, was commencement speaker. Chris Tucker, a graduating senior from Olton, gave the student address.
___ Scholarships established at Wayland. Two recent donations will provide scholarships for current and future students at Wayland Baptist University. A $341,000 gift from the estate of Dorothy McCoy will be placed in endowment to provide scholarships for students studying mathematics. McCoy was professor of mathematics from 1949 to 1975. A $10,000 gift from J.A. "Doc" and Mel Potts of Plainview will be used for student scholarships at the discretion of the university president.
