___ Bumpus elected chairman. Mark Bumpus, pastor of First Baptist Church of Mineral Wells, has been elected chairman of the Baptist Standard's board of directors. Jim Nelson, an attorney and member of Hyde Park Baptist Church in Austin, was elected vice chairman. Margarita Treviño, a member of First Baptist Church of Keller and president of the Christian Education and Research Institute, was elected secretary. At their winter meeting, Standard trustees also approved a 2002 budget that calls for no subscription rate increase.
___ DBU music department accredited. The music department of Dallas Baptist University has earned accreditation from the
___National Association of Schools of Music. Earning this nationally recognized accreditation has been one of the major goals of Stephen Holcomb, music department chairman, and Ed Spann, dean of the College of Fine Arts, since they began their service at DBU in 1988 and 1989 respectively.
___ HPU music department in good standing. The music department of the School of Music and Fine Arts at Howard Payne University remains in good standing as a member of the National Association of Schools of Music. Accreditation was reaffirmed after a periodic self-study and accrediting team visit.
___ HSU receives science grant. The Welch Foundation of Houston has awarded Hardin-Simmons University's department of chemistry and physics a renewal research grant of $75,000. The research supported by this grant investigates the effects of oil spills on soil. The research grant also translates into student scholarships.
___ River Ministry training offered. Three regional training conferences for Texas Baptist River Ministry are slated for Saturdays in February and March. Each conference begins at 8:30 a.m. and concludes at 3 p.m. Dates and locations are: Feb. 23, First Baptist Church of Waxahachie; March 2, West Conroe Baptist Church in Conroe; and March 9, Templo Bautista in Lubbock. ___ UMHB receives grant. The University of Mary Hardin-Baylor received a $250,000 grant from the Andersen Foundation of Bayport, Minn., for construction of Parker Academic Center.
___ Wayland announces scholarship fund. Wayland Baptist University has received a donation that will enable a journalism or art student to travel to Paris. The Paris American Academy Scholarship was established by Fran Redinger of Ruidoso, N.M. The fund will pay half the tuition and room for the academy's four-week seminar held in July. The academy
___donated the remaining half of the tuition. The scholarship will be awarded to a junior-level student majoring in art or journalism.
___ Hilton helps Buckner. Hilton's DFW Lakes Executive Conference Center recently renovated its facility, which created a surplus of 395 hair dryers. The hotel donated the equipment to Buckner Children and Family Services of North Texas and the North Texas Food Bank. Buckner also received personal hygiene products from the company to use in aiding its programs of foster care, residential care, crisis relief and a women's shelter.
