Volunteers build their ministry on solid oak and love for kids
___BEEVILLE--Since last October, 10 Texas Baptist Men volunteers have turned the old auto shop at South Texas Children's Home into a furniture factory.
___The men--along with their wives, who are busy sewing robes, pillows and other items for the children--have set up camp to build more than 400 pieces of solid oak furniture for children served on the agency's three campuses.
___Jack Tennison, leader of the furniture builders and a member of First Baptist Church in Seguin, is quick to note the job is not furniture building but a furniture ministry.

Offering plates full despite ills of U.S. economy

___While the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks and a struggling economy might be expected to hurt church offerings, many Texas Baptist congregations report the opposite has been true.
___Texas Baptists remained faithful to their giving commitments to their churches in 2001, according to an unscientific, random telephone survey. Rather than reporting decreases, most churches across the state apparently saw record giving in 2001 and increased their budgets as they looked at 2002.

Wayland takes to the high seas in latest extension of teaching reach
___PLAINVIEW--West Texas may be noted for its dry spell more than any link to seagoing vessels, but that hasn't stopped Wayland Baptist University from taking education to the high seas.
___Robert Kessler, an adjunct professor at the Plainview school, recently returned from 18 days aboard the Coast Guard Cutter Kukui, where he taught personal finance to 11 crew members while on a regular patrol about 10 miles from the Hawaiian shore.
___The trip was a learning experience as well for Kessler, who is retired from the Army after 24 years of service. He traded his typical classroom for the ship's galley, where classes were held between meals.
