WMU leaders distance themselves from new Global Women movement
___TALLEDGA, Ala.--Leaders of Woman's Missionary Union have distanced themselves from creation of a new missionary organization for women announced late last year.
___That new organization, called Global Women, was launched by a number of former WMU officers and employees. Its purpose was described as empowering Christian women to spread the gospel to the world's unchurched women.
___During its annual meeting in Talladega, Ala., WMU's Executive Board affirmed a statement on creation of Global Women that noted WMU has "no affiliation" to the new group.
___"While many of our former leaders are involved in the new organization, their participation is a personal decision and not one connected to national WMU," the statement explained. "The current leadership of Woman's Missionary Union has not been involved in the planning nor the incorporation of this agency.
___"While there are commonalities between Woman's Missionary Union and Global Women, there are distinct differences in our purposes," it continued. "WMU's desire for 113 years has been to create the kind of environment through missions education in the church that enables individuals to hear God's call to serve in whatever way he leads and to support our missionaries.
___"WMU's commitment is to remain true to our founding purpose," the statement added. "We will not become distracted from our calling to share Christ with a lost and hurting world."
___In other business, the WMU Executive Board:
___ Awarded $79,675 in Second Century Fund grants and $11,589 in other grants and scholarships.
___ Approved a redesign of the Acteens missions education program for teenage girls and its related resources.
