___ CLC conference looks at character. "Christian Character" is the theme of the annual statewide Texas Baptist Christian Life Conference, slated for Feb. 11-12 at Trinity Baptist Church in San Antonio. Sponsored by the Baptist General Convention of Texas Christian Life Commission, the conference will explore the matter of character formation biblically and theologically. Speakers include Michael Cartwright, chairman of the philosophy and religion department at the University of Indianapolis; Philip Kenneson, associate professor of theology and philosophy at Milligan College in eastern Tennessee; Don Murdock, executive director of Laity Lodge; Charles Pinches, professor of theology at the University of Scranton, Penn.; and Jonathan Wilson, professor of religious studies at Westmont College in Santa Barbara, Calif. Grammy and Dove Award-winning recording artist Cynthia Clawson will present musical theme interpretations. Registration is $35 per person, which includes two meals. ___ HBTS names Lozano. Nora Lozano has been named assistant professor of biblical/theological studies at Hispanic Baptist Theological School. She holds a bachelor's degree in social communication from Regiomontana University in Monterrey, Mexico, a master of divinity degree from Eastern Baptist Theological Seminary and is completing her doctoral dissertation at Drew University. Her dissertation topic is "Confronting Suffering: An Evangelical Woman's Theological Challenge to the Traditional View of Suffering in the Mexican and Mexican-American Realities."
___ New name for ministry. Bill Glass Ministries began the new year with a new name, Champions for Life. The Duncanville-based prison ministry works nationwide and overseas. In 32 years of ministry, founder Bill Glass has spoken to more inmates than any other person. The name change is part of an effort to involve younger Christians as volunteers in the ministry.
___ Hillcrest president to retire. Richard Scott has announced plans to retire as president of Hillcrest Baptist Medical Center in Waco Oct. 31 or as soon as a successor is named. He will conclude a 40-year career with the hospital, rising through the ranks from registration clerk to president, a position he has held since 1992. He has been active as a volunteer in professional groups, civic organizations and in local Baptist work and has led the medical center through a period of growth.
___ HBU offers preview events. Houston Baptist University invites prospective students to learn more about the university at three January events. Scholarship Scoops at 7 p.m. Jan. 8 will introduce information about financial aid availability and how to apply. Husky Hoopla at 7:15 p.m. Jan. 19 is an invitation to see the university's men's basketball team in action and experience campus life.
