Texas volunteers sought to teach in China this summer
___DALLAS--Volunteers are needed to teach English in China this summer, according to Lorene Salyer, China coordinator for the Mission Service Corps office of the Baptist General Convention of Texas.
___The BGCT works with three sending agencies--the Southern Baptist International Mission Board, the Cooperative Baptist Fellowship and The Edge Institute. The CBF also is planning a summer cultural exchange for college students.
___"Healthy, adventurous adults," both young and old, are needed for the teaching projects, Salyer said. "Committed Christians must be able to sh
ow their love for God by the life they live. One must be flexible and work well as a team member."
___Volunteers also must be able to "tolerate the hot climate" and be able to carry their own luggage and climb several flights of stairs, she added.
___The teams at most universities are able to attend a Chinese church on Sunday, Salyer said. "Even though volunteers are able to understand little of what is said, ... attendance is an encouragement to the Chinese Christian.
___"Those who go say they return home never to be the same. The experience cannot be compared with anything they have ever done before," she said.
___IMB volunteers will serve July 2 through Aug. 3, teaching English to Chinese teachers and university students. Teams will go to various cities. Cost is $2,500, which includes airfare. Individuals, couples or teams are welcome. The IMB also has some one- and two-week projects.
___CBF volunteers will teach oral English to teachers July 3 through Aug. 5. Cost is $2,200 if paid by March 15 or $2,400 by May 1. A non-refundable $200 fee is due by April 15. The CBF also has one- and two-week projects.
___The Edge Institute offers three- and four-week programs. It needs 30 teachers for July 7 through Aug. 2 and 10 teachers for July 9 through Aug. 9. Cost has not been determined.
___The CBF cultural exchange for college students tentatively is set for July 18 through Aug. 6. Students will be in morning classes learning Chinese language, calligraphy, art and history. The rest of the day will be for social and recreational activities. Cost is $2,200 if paid by March 15 and $2,400 by May 1.
