Hardin-Simmons breaks ground
on three campus construction projects

___ABILENE--Trustees and guests at Hardin-Simmons University got three for the price of one Feb. 8 with a day of triple groundbreaking ceremonies.
___Groundbreakings were held for the new Elwin L. Skiles Social Sciences Building; Linebery Boulevard, a new campus entranceway from Pine Street; and Linebery Memorial Clock Tower.
___Construction on the new social sciences building was to begin Feb. 18, with completion slated for fall 2003. It is named for a former university president who now serves as president emeritus.

___The 23,500-square-foot structure will house 21 offices and seven classrooms. It also will feature the HSU Hall of Leaders, a simulated courtroom and a simulated Legislative Hearing Room.
___Included in the list of major donors is Texas Instruments, which has helped fund construction of the Win Skiles Legislative Hearing Room in memory of the late Win Skiles. He served as vice president and general counsel for Texas Instruments prior to his death last year and was the son of Elwin Skiles.
___The second floor will feature the Clayton Roundtable Room, a classroom to seat 105 students under a domed ceiling. This room is named in memory of Lawrence Clayton, former dean of the School of Liberal Arts.
___In other highlights, trustees learned the Scarborough-Linebery Foundation of Midland will provide a $500,000 endowment to fund the operations of the HSU Six White Horses program. This will be known as the Linebery Six White Horse Endowment.
___The late Tom and Evelyn Linebery were longtime supporters of the Six White Horses program and helped fund the W.O. "Doc" Beazley White Horse Center in 1995.
___Trustees also approved a $28.18 million budget for the fiscal year beginning June 1. Included in the budget is a 6 percent increase ($20 per semester hour) in the tuition rate. Undergraduates will pay $350 per semester hour, and graduate students $360 per semester hour. Room and board and other fees remain unchanged.
___All HSU students who are currently enrolled full time and making satisfactory progress toward a degree will not see an increase in tuition.
