Baylor reorganizes church relations effort,
taps Newman to direct expanded program
___WACO--Baylor University has announced a reorganization and expansion of its church relations program, with a strengthened emphasis on shaping Baptist identity, teaching Baptist history and theology and cultivating networks among Baptist leadership.
___Carey Newman, a 1989 Baylor doctoral graduate, has been named director of church relations and will oversee the revamped program out of the president's office.
___"It is important at this time in Baylor's history--and at this point in Baptist life--that we provide leadership and service to the Baptists in Texas and across the country," said President Robert Sloan. "Baylor is uniquely positioned to help shape Baptist identity, preserve Baptist history and facilitate Baptist leadership."
___Sloan said changes in the church relations office relate to the new 10-year strategy recently adopted by the university. That strategy calls for making Baylor one of the top 50 universities in the nation while at the same time reaffirming its Baptist heritage.
___Baylor spokesman Larry Brumley said church relations will launch a more aggressive outreach program to develop leadership among Baptist pastors in the state.
___This will include development of a journal of Baptist life and culture, forums for intellectual and scholarly discussion and possibly a post-doctoral program in Baptist studies, Brumley said.
___"President Sloan's deep desire to forge enduring and mutually beneficial bonds between the Baptist churches of Texas and Baylor University is as noble a task as it is crucial and timely," said Newman. "I am thrilled and honored by the opportunity to serve in this way."
___Newman earned the doctor of philosophy degree in religion from Baylor; master of theology degree from the University of Aberdeen, Scotland; master of divinity degree from Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary; and an undergraduate degree from the University of South Florida.
___He is a former New Testament professor at Palm Beach Atlantic College in West Palm Beach, Fla., and Southern Baptist Theological Seminary in Louisville, Ky. For the past four years, he has been senior editor for academic books at Westminster John Knox Press in Louisville.
___He has 15 years of local-church ministry experience, including frequent use as an interim pastor and guest preacher.
___Newman is married to Leanne Lewis Newman, a 1985 Baylor graduate and the daughter of former Southern Baptist medical missionaries Wilbur and Gladys Lewis.
