___bluebull Pirtle scholarship established. The family of Angielena Pirtle has funded a presidential endowed scholarship at the University of Mary Hardin-Baylor. Pirtle's sister, Catherine Pirtle Howes and her husband, Knowlton Howes, of Dallas, established the scholarship. Pirtle was born in Temple in 1908. When she attended Baylor College for Women (now the University of Mary Hardin-Baylor), she had to walk from the farm each day to school. Even though her home study was from a kerosene lamp, she graduated in three years. During World War II, she joined the U.S. Navy Waves and later worked as a reservist and with the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development.
