Baptist Briefs
___bluebull BWA plans anniversary meeting. "Jesus Christ Living Water" is the theme for the 100th anniversary celebrations of the Baptist World Alliance July 27-31, 2005, in Birmingham, England. The theme was approved by the BWA executive committee. The BWA was begun in London in 1905, but the centennial BWA Congress will be held in Birmingham at the suggestion of British Baptists due to exorbitant prices and difficult transportation concerns in London.
___bluebull New Mexicans help fire victims. Members of a Baptist church near a fire-ravaged area in south-central New Mexico offered assistance to victims of the blaze within hours of the destruction of more than two-dozen homes during the March 23-24 weekend. First Baptist Church of Ruidoso offered the use of a vacant home it owned to a family whose home was lost. The church also has offered use of its missionary residence to an affected family.
___bluebull 'Baptist Hour' TV to feature Graham. Jack Graham, pastor of Prestonwood Baptist Church in Plano and this year's candidate for the Southern Baptist Convention presidency, has been named as the new speaker for "The Baptist Hour" television program. The program is produced by FamilyNet, a Fort Worth-based subsidiary of the North American Mission Board. For the past 11 years, the show has featured Frank Pollard, who retired recently as pastor of First Baptist Church of Jackson, Miss. Pollard's preaching role on the radio version of "The Baptist Hour" has been assumed by Bob Reccord, NAMB's president.
___bluebull Brunson to be nominated. Mac Brunson, pastor of First Baptist Church of Dallas, will be nominated for the presidency of the Southern Baptist Pastors' Conference, according to Ken Whitten, a Florida pastor who is the current president of the organization.
___bluebull Crossover events planned. Southern Baptists will offer a "Gateway to Hope" June 7-9 as part of Crossover St. Louis, the 13th annual evangelism emphasis conducted prior to the Southern Baptist Convention annual meeting. About 80 local churches in seven associations have committed to participating in the effort, and recruitment is under way for hundreds of additional volunteers from other areas. Planned events include block parties, prayer journeys, door-to-door personal evangelism and evangelistic sports clinics for children and youth, street evangelism teams, inner-city personal evangelism, a ministry to nightclub employees and dancers and a "Kindness Explosion" ministry. For more information or to request a volunteer assignment with Crossover St. Louis, contact Doyle Echols via e-mail at dechols@stlbaptists.org or by telephone at (314) 569-1190, extension 305.
___bluebull Correction: A brief in last week's paper incorrectly identified Gary Smith of Oklahoma as a member of a Southern Baptist Convention committee to study financial resources. The committee member actually is Gary Smith, pastor of Fielder Road Baptist Church in Arlington.
