___ Baylor social work receives $2 million grant. The Pew Charitable Trust has awarded Baylor University's School of Social Work $2 million as part of a $6 million study of how urban congregations and faith-based organizations are making a difference in the lives of families and communities facing poverty. The research will be disseminated to churches through the National Crime Prevention Council, said Diana Garland, dean of the social work school.
___ Radio training offered. The Texas Baptist Wireless Association will offer a statewide training event for current and prospective amateur radio operators from 5 p.m. April 27 to noon April 28 at Texas Baptist Men's Equipping Center in Dallas. In addition to updates for current radio operators, the event will include basic training that could enable participants to earn an amateur radio license. Training is offered at no cost, but a $6 fee is required to take the qualifying exam for a license. The Equipping Center is located at 5321 Catron in east Dallas.
___ HSU inducts nine into Hall of Leaders. Nine distinguished graduates or former students of Hardin-Simmons University were added to the school's Hall of Leaders April 5. New inductees, all added posthumously, are John Leland "Lee" Atwood, Omar Truman Burleson, Eugene Holman, Holman Jenkens, Conrad Ramsey Lam, Sid W. Richardson, Jefferson Davis Sandefer Jr., Maye Bell Taylor and Clyde "Bulldog" Turner.
___ TBM gets grant. The Meadows Foundation has awarded Texas Baptist Men an $84,000 grant to buy a new tractor to pull the Texas Baptist disaster relief mobile unit. The new tractor will replace a 22-year-old rig that has more than 4.6 million miles on it. The Meadows Foundation is a Dallas-based private philanthropic institution that funds projects designed to improve Texans' quality of life. Texas Baptist Men still needs about $25,000 to cover the total cost of the tractor. Last year, the first $50,000 received over the $5.75 million Mary Hill Davis Offering for Texas missions goal had been earmarked for that purpose, but the offering fell short of that amount.
___ Harrison scholarship established. A new presidential endowed student scholarship has been established at Hardin-Simmons University by the estate of Mary Beth and Payne Harrison. The scholarship will be awarded based on need, with preference to the daughter or son of a current Southern Baptist minister.
___ Clarification: Last week's story on Dallas physician Don Meier's mission work in Afghanistan identified him as a member of Park Cities Baptist Church, which is true, but did not explain that he is involved in supporting City Church, a new congregation sponsored by Park Cities and two other Dallas churches. Also, the article incorrectly stated that the organization sponsoring the Albanian medical education conferences is the Baptist Medical-Dental Fellowship, when in fact it is the Christian Medical Dental Association.
