___Deaths
___ John Brewer, 92, April 10 in Severna Park, Md. Brewer, a graduate and former faculty member at Hardin-Simmons University, achieved an international reputation as a scientist in the field of microbiology and directed scientific aspects of the first Viking mission to Mars. Brewer returned to teach at Hardin-Simmons in 1969, serving as a professor of microbiology and director of the Fairleigh Dickinson Science Research Center. He retired from HSU in 1984. He is survived by his wife, Evelyn; daughter, Elizabeth Butler; two grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.
