RIDGECREST CHAPEL
Baptist Briefs
___bluebull Ridgecrest chapel opens. Officials with LifeWay Christian Resources' Ridgecrest Conference Center opened the doors to a new 300-seat Rutland Chapel April 10. Built with a $1 million gift from the Rutland Family Foundation of Decatur, Ga., the chapel is a stone and wood structure set on a mountainside overlooking the North Carolina conference center complex. In addition to the chapel area, the building has conference and fellowship space. George Beverly Shea, longtime soloist with the Billy Graham Evangelistic Association and a resident of the area, sang during the dedication service.
___bluebull Kentucky missionary fund started. The Kentucky Baptist Fellowship has joined a growing list of moderate groups pledging to provide financial aid to Southern Baptist Convention international missionaries who resign rather than sign an affirmation of the 2000 Baptist Faith & Message. Kentucky Fellowship Coordinator John Lepper said the group's executive committee established a fund at the request of an anonymous donor who contributed $1,000. The fund specifically will assist missionaries with Kentucky connections. The Baptist General Convention of Texas has established a million-dollar "transition" fund to support missionaries who resign or are fired for refusing to affirm the SBC's faith statement. Mainstream Baptist groups in Alabama, Oklahoma and South Carolina have announced plans to collect and forward funds to the Texas Baptist effort. Baptists in Oklahoma already have pledged $250,000, according to Bruce Prescott, executive director of Mainstream Oklahoma Baptists.
