___ Jesse Fletcher recently was honored as the Hardin-Simmons University former staff/administration member of the year. He served the school as president from 1977 until 1991 and as chancellor until June 1. George Newman, professor of biology emeritus and a current trustee, served as a member of the school's faculty for 25 years, retiring in 1992. He was named former faculty member of the year.

___ Thelma Andrews, former head librarian for Hardin-Simmons University and the city of Abilene, was recognized as a "Library Champion" at the Texas Library Association's annual conference April 24. She was head librarian at the university for 31 years. She died in 1989 at the age of 85.

___Deaths
___ Bill Kelley, 87, Feb. 23 in Longview. During his ministry of more than 60 years, he was pastor of churches in Roxton, Naples, Bullard, Lindale, Kilgore, Pleasanton, Alice, Waxahachie and Neches. He was a member of First Church in Longview at the time of his death. He is survived by his wife of 59 years, Rosalee; daughters, Sue Hall, Nancy Ray and Pam Sackett; son, Truman; brothers George, Kenneth and Winford; sisters Etta Lee Shell and Belle Stone; six grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren.
___ Lawton Griffith, March 7 in Wenatchee, Wash. He was the former pastor of North Oak Cliff Church in Dallas. He is survived by his wife, Chris; three daughters and five grandchildren.
___ Ralph Jones, March 16 in Monroe, La. He was pastor of churches in Austin, Eagle Lake and Galena Park before moving to Louisiana. He is survived by his wife, Jonell; three children; and five grandchildren.
___ William Gartner, 70, April 10 in Fort Stockton. Gartner is the former pastor of Big Bend Church in Terlingua. He is survived by his sons, Chris, Karl and Steve; daughter, Mimi Gartner; adopted daughter, Dayle Burkhart; sister, Ann House; and two grandchildren.
___ Gena Hampton, 72, April 22 in Marble Falls. She and her husband, James, were appointed as missionaries by the International Mission Board in 1956 and worked in Kenya and Tanzania. The Hamptons resigned in 1989, when he accepted a position with Cooperative Services International, then then humanitarian arm of the IMB. They assumed the status of emeritus missionaries in 1996. She was preceded in death by two children, Kathy and Stephen. She is survived by her husband; daughters Connie Hager, Laura Leigh Garvin and Lisa Worthing; son Ronald; and 10 grandchildren.
___ Bill Treadwell, 70, April 23 in Waco. Treadwell was associate professor of Christian education and leadership/administration at Baylor University's Truett Seminary since 1995. A founder of the Alliance of Baptists, he served churches in South Carolina, Georgia, Kentucky, North Carolina and Texas. His teaching career also included posts at Southern Seminary and Georgetown College. He is survived by his wife, Lu; mother, Frances; daughters, Cynthia LaMaster and Christy Somerville; son, William; and nine grandchildren.
