___ Senior Saints coming to UMHB. The University of Mary Hardin-Baylor's annual Senior Saints Summit is scheduled for May 20-23. Speakers will be Bailey Stone, retired evangelism director for the Baptist General Convention of Texas, and Leroy Kemp, religion professor at UMHB. Tom and Pam Taylor will provide banquet entertainment. The UMHB Concert Choir also will perform. Registration for out-of-town participants who need lodging is $110 per person or $200 per married couple. Commuter participants will pay $75 per person. For more information call (254) 295-4620.
___ ICE training offered. Several opportunities are planned through the summer and fall for Texas Baptists to be involved in learning the highly successful evangelism techniques of the Inner City Evangelism team based in San Antonio. ICE events are planned for Fort Worth, Dallas, Irving and Waco. ___ Pinson delivers Baptist history lectures at DBU. Bill Pinson, executive director emeritus of the Baptist General Convention of Texas, led a lecture series named in his honor at Dallas Baptist University April 9-10. The series on Baptist history and heritage was established through the BGCT's Christian Education Coordinating Board and rotates among BGCT universities. Education and evangelism/mission are two necessary aspects for the future of Baptists, he told the DBU audience. "These are like the wings of an eagle. Without one, we will plummet; with both, we will soar."
___ ETBU prof wins award. "Mistress of Manifest Destiny," written by East Texas Baptist University history professor Linda Hudson, has received the 2002 Fehrenbach Award as the best book on Texas history. The book also has been named a finalist for the Most Significant Contribution to Knowledge award given by the Texas Institute of Letters. The book tells the story of Jane McManus Storm Cazneau (1807-1878), a single parent and working mother who worked as a journalist, adviser to political figures and publicist. She coined the phrase "manifest destiny."
___ ETBU sets budget. East Texas Baptist University trustees unanimously approved a $22.37 million budget for the 2002-2003 fiscal year, which includes a $25 per hour tuition increase. That brings students' total cost to $300 per credit hour. Fees will not increase, but there will be a slight increase in room and board rates. Even with the increase, university officials said, ETBU will remain among the lowest-cost private universities in Texas. As a way to encourage continuous enrollment, ETBU also has established a new scholarship program for students who have attended three consecutive years. Eligible students will receive $750 in their fourth year.
___ HBU adds scholarships. Seven new endowed scholarships have been created at Houston Baptist University, bringing the total of endowed scholarship funds at HBU to 250. New endowed scholarships include one given by Faye Dunwoody and children in memory of Ray Dunwoody; the Marvy Finger scholarship honoring Stewart Morris, trustee chairman; the Karl and Mary Kennard scholarship; the Laura Wallis Ferguson scholarship, given by Gilbert and Nell Wallis in memory of their daughter; the Gwen and Michel Mellinger scholarships honoring their daughter, Yolande Frazier, and their granddaughter, Holly Cannon; the E.P. WestGaze Scholarship honoring Ted Gaze, former pastor of Second Baptist Church of Houston.
___ UMHB receives grant. The University of Mary Hardin-Baylor has received a $50,000 grant from the Grogan Lord Foundation of Georgetown. The grant will fund the Ida Myrtle Roberts Manning Tomorrow's Leaders Scholarship.
___ DBU holds Decatur Day. Dallas Baptist University held its annual Decatur Day and Decatur Baptist College spring reunion April 20. The celebration honors the predecessor institution to DBU. During this year's event, DBU presented the Distinguished Alumni Award to Mike Howard, a 1956 graduate of Decatur Baptist College and a retired Secret Service agent. The Honorary Decatur Alumni Award was presented to Bill Pinson, executive director emeritus of the Baptist General Convention of Texas.
___ Baylor names strategic planning chief. Van Gray, associate professor of management at Baylor University, has been named the university's associate vice president for strategic planning and improvement. Gray will lead efforts to support the Baylor 2012 strategic plan.
___ Rivera retiring. Dan Rivera, 62, has announced his retirement from Hispanic Baptist Theological School, where he is chief fund-raising administrator. It is effective May 23. "For several years I have had a burning desire to assist Baptist entities in Mexico and other Spanish-speaking countries with establishing centers for theological education," Rivera said. "I have been teaching pastoral care courses in the Yucatan Peninsula and Guadalajara for the last two years," and "the time is now to obey the commission of our Lord in these mission areas." Prior to his current assignment, Rivera served as president of Hispanic Baptist Theological Seminary, president of Valley Baptist Academy, interim president of South Texas Community College and vice chancellor of the nine-campus Texas State Technical College System. He and his wife, Gloria, will have their ministry headquarters in San Antonio.
