Board proposes BGCT child-care offering
___By Ken Camp
___Texas Baptist Communications
___Instead of observing Mother's Day by giving flowers to the oldest and youngest mothers at church, members of the Human Welfare Coordinating Board hope Texas Baptists in the future might give an offering to benefit ministries serving children who are separated from their mothers.
___At its April 26 meeting in Dallas, the coordinating board recommended that the Baptist General Convention of Texas consider designating Mother's Day as a time of special emphasis on child and family services institutions affiliated with the BGCT.
___The board also approved a recommendation by Jerry Becknal, pastor of First Baptist Church in Tahoka and chairman of the coordinating board's child and family care committee, asking the BGCT to explore the possibility of creating a special Mother's Day offering for Texas Baptist child-care homes and family services.
___Four child and family ministry agencies are affiliated with the BGCT--Baptist Child & Family Services of San Antonio; Buckner Baptist Benevolences; South Texas Children's Home in Beeville; and Texas Baptist Children's Home & Family Services in Round Rock.
___The matter will be referred to the convention's Administrative Committee for further study, according to Keith Bruce, coordinator of BGCT institutional ministries.
___In other business, the coordinating board also voted to name the opportunity scholarship fund in honor of Roger Hall, who recently retired as BGCT treasurer and chief financial officer.
___The scholarship provides financial assistance designed to enable young people from Texas Baptist children's homes to attend Texas Baptist universities.
___The BGCT Christian Education Coordinating Board had given its approval earlier to naming the fund in Hall's honor.
