New study notes shift of Hispanic Protestants

___WASHINGTON (RNS)--While a strong majority of Latinos in the United States are Roman Catholic, there has been a generational shift to Protestantism, according to a major new study.
___According to the study, "Hispanic Churches in American Public Life," the number of Protestants in the American Hispanic population increased from 18 percent to 32 percent across three generations, while the number of Catholics declined from 74 percent to 59 percent over the same period. Overall, 71 percent of Hispanics today are Catholic.

___AUSTIN--A slight awkwardness saturates the air as Elissa Benford, owner of Lisa's Hope Chest, greets Fe, the newest customer at the upscale boutique.
___Fe isn't a typical customer for such a clothing store. But she is typical of the people Benford assists every week.
___Fe is a client of the Family Care program at Texas Baptist Children's Home & Family Services in Round Rock. And although they've never met, Fe is no stranger to Benford; she sees her in the faces of all women who shop at her store.

Two Dallas churches announce big building plans; third already going

___DALLAS--Two Dallas churches have announced multi-million-dollar building projects that will be among the most expensive ever undertaken by a Texas Baptist church.
___First Baptist Church of Dallas plans a $48 million project for its downtown location. A current education and office building as well as a parking garage will be demolished to erect an eight-story building to house classrooms, offices, a bookstore, coffee and snack bar, fellowship mall, two chapels, prayer tower, banquet hall/theater, catering facilities and underground parking.
___A few miles north of downtown, Park Cities Baptist Church plans a $35 million project for its property on Northwest Highway.
