___ Baptists at White House. Nine Southern Baptist Convention officials were among nearly 200 people invited to the White House for the National Day of Prayer May 2. Southern Baptists participating in the program at which President George W. Bush spoke included former Southern Baptist Convention presidents Tom Elliff, pastor of First Southern Baptist Church in Del City, Okla., and evangelist Bailey Smith of Atlanta; state convention executive directors Robert White of Georgia and Jim Richards of

Tens of thousands of people attended the rally, which included a speech by Israel's former Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, calling for a resumption of peace talks in the Middle East, an end to terror and to express concern at the rise in anti-semitism worldwide.

___ Durham to lead CBF Foundation. Don Durham has been named president of the Cooperative Baptist Fellowship Foundation. He succeeds Ruben Swint, who now works for a church fund-raising firm. Durham's experience in fund-raising includes his current work as director of development at United Methodist Family Services in Richmond, Va. Durham, 33, is a graduate of Gardner-Webb University and Southern Baptist Theological Seminary.
___ Reccord on the air. Bob Reccord, president of the Southern Baptist Convention's North American Mission Board, will be a guest on Pat Robertson's "700 Club" May 14. He will discuss his new book, "Beneath the Surface--Steering Clear of the Dangers That Could Leave You Shipwrecked," and tell listeners how to deal with temptation. Reccord and his wife, Cheryl, were featured guests May 6-7 on the James Dobson's "Focus On The Family" radio program.
___ Texans on SBC program. A number of Texans will play prominent roles on the program for this summer's Southern Baptist Convention annual meeting in St. Louis. In addition to Claude Thomas, pastor of First Baptist Church of Euless, delivering the convention message June 11, other Texans on the program include the adult choir and orchestra of First Baptist Church of Dallas, Tuesday morning, June 11; Todd Bell, minister of music and worship at Prestonwood Baptist Church in Plano, Tuesday morning, June 11; Freddie Gage, evangelist from Euless, Tuesday morning, June 11; Richard Wells, president of Criswell College in Dallas, Tuesday evening, June 11; Frank Harber, senior pastor of First Baptist Church in Colleyville and chairman of the convention's resolutions committee, Wednesday morning, June 12; Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary President Ken Hemphill, Wednesday morning, June 12; Annuity Board President O.S. Hawkins, Wednesday morning, June 12; and Ruben Hernandez, state missions and evangelism director for the Southern Baptists of Texas Convention, Wednesday morning, June 12.
___ N.M. camp damaged by fire. The Penasco Fire that raged across parts of New Mexico's Sacramento Mountains last week destroyed a bathhouse and six cabins at Sivells Baptist Retreat and Conference Center, owned by the Baptist Convention of New Mexico. All in all, 128 beds were claimed by the flames. However, major parts of the camp were left undamaged, including the dining hall, a motel, the chapel, classrooms and a recently renovated Family Retreat Center.
___ Churches leave SBC. Three longtime Texas Baptist churches recently voted to leave the Southern Baptist Convention. First Baptist Church in Austin affirmed a study committee recommendation that suggested the church "terminate its official relations with the Southern Baptist Convention." First Baptist churches in Cuero and Muleshoe took similar action by voting to redirect their Cooperative Program unified budget contributions away from the SBC.
