___ East Texas Baptist University recently honored 50 students in 17 fields of study. Honored in the religion department were Phillip Day as the outstanding student; Derek Hatch and Jennifer Blair shared the Zondervan Greek Award; Cory Glover received a scholarship from Truett Seminary; John Mark Ritchey earned the James and Mary Williams award; and the Southwestern Seminary President's award went to Misty Maynard. ___ The secretaries of Bowie Association recently held their first awards dinner at First Church of Wake Village in Texarkana. Charlene Foltz of Myrtle Springs Church in Hooks received the award for longest service; Lana Murphy of First Church of Wake Village, the award for serving with the most pastors and staff; Dena Collins, the award for serving without a supervisor the longest; and Sandra Hammons, for serving the longest with one pastor. Gila Nichols of First Church in Nash was named secretary of the year. ___ Susan Allen, associate professor of social work and head of the department at Hardin-Simmons University, has been named president-elect of the Texas Association of Social Work Deans and Directors. ___ Donna Walker-Nixon, professor of English at the University of Mary Hardin-Baylor, has been named a Piper Professor. The award is presented by the Minnie Stevens Piper Foundation in San Antonio to 10 professors in Texas for superior teaching at the college level. She has taught in the UMHB English department since 1989. ___ Bob Feather has received the distinguished leadership award from the Baptist Association of Christian Educators, one of four given this year by the national organization. He is vice president of the Texas Baptist Laity Institute. ___ Marsha Rutland, a visiting assistant professor of physical therapy at Hardin-Simmons University, has been named a recipient of the outstanding clinical educator award by the Texas Consortium for Physical Therapy Clinical Education. She was one of 10 recipients in the state of Texas. She recently received her master's degree in sports and recreation management at HSU. She has been a clinical educator in the state for more than 20 years. ___Anniversaries ___ Jerry Becknal, 10th, as pastor of First Church in Tahoka, May 12. The church also dedicated its redecorated auditorium, which concluded a multi-phase remodeling of the entire church facility that began in 1997. ___ Troy Richardson, 25th in the ministry, June 5. During those years he has been pastor of two Utah churches, Calvary Church in San Augustine, Bon Weir Church in Bon Weir and Dogwood Hills Church in Woodville, where he has served the last 10 years. ___ First Church in Buffalo, 125th, June 9. Registration will begin at 9:30 a.m. followed by morning worship will begin at 10. A catered luncheon will begin at noon, and reservations must be made at (903) 322-4332 by May 31. An afternoon worship featuring former pastors and various music artists will follow the meal. Dale Osteen is pastor. ___ Iglesia Getsemani in Fort Worth, 10th, June 16. Ellis Orozco, pastor of Calvary Church in McAllen and a former interim pastor of the Fort Worth church, will be the guest speaker. Julio Guarneri is pastor. ___Retiring ___ Donald Alford, as dean of the School of Education at East Texas Baptist University. Alford joined the ETBU faculty in 1978 as an associate professor. In addition to his current role, he also has served as chairman of the department of teacher education and chairman of the division of education. ___ John Vaughan, as professor of English at East Texas Baptist University. He has taught at the university 35 years. ___Deaths ___ Betty McElveen, 61, May 7 in Dallas. McElveen died after a 21-year battle with cancer. She joined First Church in Dallas in 1969 and joined the staff as preschool ministry assistant in 1974. After more than 27 years of service, she took early retirement in June 2001 due to her failing health. She is survived by her mother, Cordia Wells; and her sister, Glenda Wells. ___Revivals ___ Waddill Street Church, McKinney; evangelist, Joe Atkinson; music, Randy Turner; pastor, Robert Helsley. ___ Fort Graham Church, Whitney; May 26; evangelist, Freddie Gage; pastor, Allan Lane. ___ vocational evangelist ___Stacy James, Miss Texas, recently visited the Sagecrest Alzheimer's Care Center in San Angelo. James, a Baylor University graduate, is a member of Trinity Church in Texarkana, Ark.
