___ Seminary seals deal on casket. Jerry Barlow, associate professor of preaching and pastoral work at New Orleans Baptist Theological Seminary, recently secured the donation of a casket as a teaching aid in the Pastoral Ministry Chapel. The presence of the casket, he said, helps reinforce to students the importance of pastoral ministry during funerals. Barlow often stands at the head of the casket during his lectures to show how to be available for mourners at a funeral. He also teaches students how to prepare what he calls an "expositional eulogy."
___ NAMB trustees elect officers. Terry Fox, pastor of Immanuel Baptist Church in Wichita, Kan., has been elected chairman of trustees for the Southern Baptist Convention's North American Mission Board. Fox, former first vice chairman, had served in recent months as chairman due to the resignation of the board chairman. Trustees also elected Barry Holcomb, pastor of Bluff Springs Baptist Church in Ashford, Ala., as first vice chairman and David Crump, pastor of Aspen Park Baptist Church in Broken Arrow, Okla., as second vice chairman. Trustees began their May 4-8 meeting in Seattle by participating in prayerwalks, door-to-door surveying and sharing food and conversation with the homeless on city streets.
___ Whitsitt to honor Knight. The William H. Whitsitt Baptist Heritage Society will honor longtime Baptist journalist Walker Knight with its 2002 Whitsitt Courage Award at the society's annual meeting June 27 in Fort Worth. This year's meeting theme is "Baptists: Advocates of a Free Press?" In addition to accepting the award, Knight will speak on "A Layman's Journey: My Struggle for a Free Baptist Press." Another noted journalist, James Wall, senior contributing editor of The Christian Century, will deliver this year's Penrose St. Amant Lecture titled "Religion and Media: The Need for a Free Press." The award honors Knight, a former associate editor of the Baptist Standard, for his advocacy of racial and gender equality while serving as a journalist at the SBC Home Mission Board.
___ Correction: A story in the Standard's May 6 issue about Texas songwriter Bart Millard incorrectly identified him as a former football coach. The story should have said he is a former high school football player.
