___ Criswell College buys residences. Criswell College has paid $1.1 million to purchase a seven-story residential building for dormitory space. The building is located adjacent to the school's campus east of downtown Dallas in what once was Gaston Avenue Baptist Church. This will be the first time Criswell College has offered student housing. School officials said they plan to raise $5 million to renovate the building. Although Criswell College is not directly affiliated with the Baptist General Convention of Texas, the BGCT allows churches to send a portion of their Cooperative Program gifts to the school. Criswell College is the lone non-SBC institution supported by the Southern Baptists of Texas Convention.
___ SBC credentials committee named. Southern Baptist Convention President James Merritt has named Kevin Clarkson, pastor of First Baptist Church of Moore, Okla., chairman of the SBC's credentials committee. The Texan appointed to the committee is Greg Dills, pastor of First Baptist Church of Sachse.
___ Tellers committee named. Southern Baptist Convention President James Merritt has named David Fleming, pastor of First Baptist Church of Daytona Beach, Fla., chairman of the SBC's tellers committee. Two Texans will serve on the committee as well: Rainey Matthews, pastor of New Life Complete in Christ Baptist Church of Fort Worth, and John McGuire, pastor of First Baptist Church of Garrison.
___ Canadian seminary marks anniversary. The Canadian Southern Baptist Seminary celebrated its 15th anniversary with the graduation of eight students May 11, including the first three students to be awarded the new bachelor of Christian ministry degree. Founded in 1987, the Canadian Seminary is the only theological school of the Canadian Convention of Southern Baptists. The small convention of 163 churches nationwide currently is endeavoring to start 1,000 churches across Canada by 2020.
___ Lampert honored. Bruce Lampert, director of pastoral care at Hendrick Memorial Medical Center in Abilene, won third place in an international preaching competition sponsored by the Baptist History and Heritage Society. Lampert will be recognized at the society's annual meeting June 20-22 in Jefferson City, Tenn. Dan Kent, retired professor of Old Testament at Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary in Fort Worth, serves as president of the association.
___ Adopt an Annuitant emphasis planned. The Southern Baptist Convention's Annuity Board will promote Adopt An Annuitant Sunday in churches nationwide June 23. With the support of individuals and churches, Adopt An Annuitant provides monthly financial_assistance to about 3,000 retired ministers and their widows living on meager retirement incomes. The theme for this year's emphasis is "Lest We Forget."
