A big shovel for a big job.
___ Baylor University President Robert Sloan disembarks from a bulldozer after using it to break ground May 17 on the largest building project in the university's 157-year history. The $103 million Baylor Sciences Building will be the largest academic center on the Baylor campus, located on the current intramural fields adjacent to McLane Student Life Center. Construction on the four-story, 500,000-square-foot building will begin in June, with completion slated for fall 2004. The building will feature a modular design with all utilities in the ceiling so that walls may be moved as needed. Ninety research laboratories are planned for the building, as well as a 300-seat auditorium and a variety of classrooms and offices. The structure will have four usable levels and a fifth floor under a sloped roof that will house animal facilities and mechanical equipment.
