AROUND THE STATE
___ Randy Wilson and Brenda Whaley are recipients of the 2002 Opal Goolsby Outstanding Teaching award at Houston Baptist University. Wilson is an associate professor in sociology. Whaley is an associate professor in biology.
___ East Texas Baptist University honored its 2002 spring graduating class during commencement exercises May 4 in Ornelas Gymnasium. More than 150 graduating seniors took part in this year's ceremony.

Paramount Church in Amarillo recently completed a successful debt-retirement campaign. Almost $1 million in debt was paid off in one year. $300,000 of the amount was for the purchase of property for Paramount Deaf Church, and the remainder was remaining debt from the construction of the the church's education building. Participating in the ceremony are deacon Chairman Rick Trafton; Singles Minister Joe Carbonaro, who now serves at First Church in Denton; and Pastor Gil Lain.

___ Kaye Hill, 10th, as minister to children at First Church in Longview.
___ Edward Hays, fifth, as minister to students at First Church in Kingwood.
___ Bethany Church in Fort Worth, 50th, June 22-23. All three of the church's pastors will be present and take part in the festivities--former pastors Roy Muncy, Walter Reid and current pastor Bob Nickell. Finger foods will be served at 6 p.m. Saturday, and former staff also will be present with their families and will participate in a celebration service at 7 p.m. A catered lunch will be served Sunday.
___ Mayfield Park Church in San Antonio, 50th, June 22-23. The celebration begins with a reunion reception at 5 p.m. Saturday. A brisket luncheon will follow the morning service on Sunday. ___ Charles Roberts, 25th, as pastor of Denman Avenue Church in Lufkin June 23. He previously was pastor of several Louisiana churches.
___ Midtown Church in Brownwood, fifth, June 23. The church will dedicate its building the same day. Artie Woodcox is pastor.

___Retiring
___ Dan Connally, as director of missions for Heart of Texas Area after 25 years of service, effective Jan. 1, 2003. He announced his retirement May 13 to the area coordinating board. A search committee has been formed and will accept resumes until Aug. 5. Resumes may be mailed to DOM Search Committee, Heart of Texas Baptist Area, P.O. Box 1646, Brownwood 76804.

___Death
___ Jack Bennett, 72, May 18 in Seymour. Bennett was pastor of Red Springs Church in Red Springs since 1999. He served in the U.S. Air Force and worked in the federal civil service at Goodfellow Air Force Base in Colorado before his retirement in 1987. Bennett became a bivocational pastor in 1976 and served numerous New Mexico churches. He also served as a pastor in Chile with the International Mission Board. Bennett was clerk of Salt Fork Association and was a member of the Bi-Fork executive committee. For the past two years, he had served on the Baptist General Convention of Texas commission to select board members and trustees for institutions. He was preceded in death by his son, Derek. He is survived by his wife, Joan; sons, Eddie and Mark John; daughter, Thana Packard; eight grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; sisters, Carol Shaw and Shirley Bennett; and brothers, David and Raymond.

Events
___ A reunion of youth choir members who sang under Duane Blakley at First Church in Garland will be held June 8-9. Blakley is moving to a new place of service at the end of the month after 25 years at the Garland church. The choir, which is expected to number about 150 people, is to sing in both Sunday morning services. Also, Living Sacrifice, a select group of 21 voices, will present "Goin' Home" at 6:15 p.m. June 9. The staged musical includes familiar hymns and spirituals, some arranged in traditional style and others in a contemporary jazz style. The musical also will be performed June 16 at 7 p.m. at the Dallas Life Foundation Shelter for the Homeless and June 23 at First Church in Athens in the morning service and at First Church in Whitney at 6 p.m.
___ Old Palestine Church in Palestine, the second-oldest Baptist church in Texas, will note 158 years of service during homecoming festivities June 9. First Voice, a Southern gospel group, will sing in the morning service. A luncheon will follow the morning service, and an afternoon sing will begin at 1:30 p.m. Dan Eakin is pastor.
___ Donnie Sumner, a Southern gospel recording artist, will be in concert at Rainbow Church in Rainbow June 22 at 6 p.m.
