DOWN HOME:
Dads can't match daughters' kicks

___"I enjoyed your performance Friday night," my friend Donna told me in Sunday School.
___"Actually, I enjoyed Lindsay and Molly's performances. They were wonderful," she added, correcting herself. "You--you were, well, entertaining."
___That's showbiz.
___The 2002 Lewisville High School Farmerette drill team Spring Show is history. And Donna's assessment probably would merit a thumbs up from just about everyone who attended the three-night run of the show.

___The Farmerettes' season started last fall, when they highlighted halftime of every LHS Fighting Farmers football game. In the spring, they performed at basketball games, participated in a competition at South Padre Island and wound up the year with the Spring Show.
___The girls danced as a group at the beginning and the end of the show. In between, they put on an amazing variety of acts, featuring everything from high-kick routines to lyrical ballet to stuff I can't even describe.
___With all those acts, the girls needed time to change their costumes, and that's where the parents came in. Oh, sure, some talented non-Farmerette students sang, danced and conducted military drills. But since the Farmerette Booster Club raises money and morale all year long, they also let us perform at Spring Show.
___This year, the moms outdid themselves with a perfectly timed military drill to the tune of Elvis Presley's "G.I. Blues." Dressed in pink T-shirts, bows and socks, as well as camouflage caps and pants, they were a huge hit.
___What the dads (David, Doug, Ernest, George, Kevin, Mark, Richie, Roger, Scott and I) lacked in skill, we made up for in enthusiasm and outlandish demeanor. We donned faux-Farmerette uniforms and performed a high-as-we-can-kick/pom/military routine to the beat of Shania Twain's "Man, I Feel Like a Woman."
___I'm not sure they were laughing at us or with us, but the crowd roared and had as much fun as we did. Just goes to show dads won't think twice about making fools of themselves for their daughters. And seemingly intelligent people will stand back and let them do it.
___Joanna and I felt doubly blessed this year, because both our daughters performed throughout Spring Show. Molly ended her rookie freshman year. Lindsay wrapped up her Farmerette career as the senior captain.
___Tears flowed at the end of the final show, and the girls weren't the only ones crying. High school goes by way too fast. And extra-curricular activities, whether they're music or sports or drama or debate or drill team or whatever, provide wonderful, lasting family memories.
___I trust God to guide our daughters through their lifetimes. But wherever they go, whatever they do and whoever they become, deep in our hearts, they'll also always be our beautiful, talented Farmerettes.
