___ Kim challenges HPU grads. Billy Kim, president of the Baptist World Alliance, challenged the graduating class of Howard Payne University to demonstrate lives of compassion, love and prayer. Kim, a pastor in South Korea, delivered the commencement address at the Brownwood school April 27.
___ Waruta & Stahl receive alumni awards. Two Hardin-Simmons University graduates have been honored by the university's Logsdon School of Theology with Distinguished Alumni awards. This year's recipients are Douglas Wanjohi Waruta, senior lecturer in religious studies at the University of Nairobi in Kenya, and Bubba Stahl, pastor of First Baptist Church of Boerne.
___ Baylor law ranked high. Baylor Law School's trial advocacy program ranks 16th in the nation in the "2003 Best Graduate School" list published by U.S. News & World Report. That's four spots ahead of Yale Law School. Overall, U.S. News ranks Baylor Law School in the second tier among the top 90 law schools in the country. The Princeton Review recently described Baylor Law School as "the Marine Corps of law schools." U.S. News also ranked Baylor's speech pathology program, physical therapy program and nursing school among the top graduate programs in the nation.
___ Scholarship honors Howard. A new music education scholarship at Baylor University will honor Ken Howard, former minister of music at Columbus Avenue Baptist Church and Park Lake Drive Baptist Church in Waco. The scholarship will be presented at a concert featuring the Baylor Concert Choir May 7 at Seventh & James Baptist Church in Waco.
___ Lott named Nursing School acting dean. Judy Wright Lott has been named acting dean of Baylor University's Herrington School of Nursing. Phyllis Karns will retire from the post June 30. Lott joined the Baylor faculty last year with 20 years of neonatal nursing experience. She is a nationally recognized expert in skin science.
___ Literacy missions event planned. The Baptist Literacy Missions Center at Baylor University will sponsor the biannual Conference for International and Literacy Missions June 13-14 on the Baylor campus. The conference will emphasize using literacy missions as an outreach and witness for Christ. Training leading to certification will be offered for English as a Second Language, adult reading and writing, and tutoring children and youth. ___ Hillcrest names president. Arthur Hohenberger has been named president and chief executive officer of Hillcrest Health System. He was elected by the system's board of directors April 24 to succeed Richard Scott, who is retiring. Since 1992, Hohenberger has been president of Texoma HealthCare System in Denison. Previously, he held administrative positions with Baylor Medical Center at Grapevine and Pioneer Park Medical Center in Irving. He is a deacon at First Baptist Church of Grapevine.
