Around the state
___ Three Texans recently received degrees from Southern Seminary in Louisville, Ky. Byron Weathersbee of Rotan received a doctor of education degree in leadership. His home church is Columbus Avenue Church in Waco, and he is executive director of Legacy Family Ministries, also in Waco. Michael Wilson of Midland received a doctor of education degree. Wilshire Park Church in Midland is his home church. He is vice president of institutional advancement at Midwestern Seminary. Matthew Domin of Austin received a master of divinity degree. Hyde Park Church in Austin is his home church. He is a Mission Service Corps missionary with campus ministries for the North American Mission Board.
Theiss Jones (left) recently retired as minister of music at First Church in Temple. He served the church 31 years and was in the ministry 45 years. He is pictured with his wife, Suzie, and Renay and Joseph Joubert. The Jouberts presented a concert of piano and vocal workshop music at the church in Jones' honor.
___ Jason Duesing and Nathan Lino, both of Kingwood, received master of divinity degrees at Southeastern Seminary.
___ Kenneth Morrison of Midland recently received the master of divinity degree from Mercer University.
___ Sylvie Raquel, a graduate of East Texas Baptist University, and Matthew Wohlfarth of San Antonio recently received doctor of philosophy degrees from New Orleans Seminary.

An afternoon service will feature more of the special musicians, testimonies, a church history presentation, recognition of long-time members and previous members, and Marcus Golhke preaching. ___ Lamar Church in Beaumont, 55th, July 12-14. James Brown, meterologist for a local television station as well as a minister, will speak. ___ Christchurch Fellowship in Houston will be the site of the Restorative Justice Ministry Awareness Conference, June 29. The conference aims to bring together chaplains, prison ministry leaders, ongoing prison ministries, churches with prison outreach programs and prayer partners. The speakers' program, led by Dave Umfreville, prison ministry pastor at First Church in Dallas, will run from 9:30 a.m. until 3 p.m. Speaking will be Emmett Solomon, director of the Restorative Justice Ministries Network of Texas; Steve Jackson, Texas director of Champions for Life (formerly Bill Glass Ministries); Reggie Kennard, manager of Prison Fellowship Ministries in Houston; Jerry Groom, executive director of Exodus Ministries; Larry Frank, director of Aftercare, Innerchange Freedom Initiative of Houston; June Groom, assistant director of the programs and services division of the Texas Department of Criminal Justice; and Roseanna Ruiz, project manager for ex-offender assistance and reintegration project in the Mayor's Citizen's Assistance Office in Houston. ___Death
___ S.L. Tate, 70, April 24 in Abilene. He was music minister at First Church in Hamlin from 1961 until 1964. He then served in Odessa, Pampa and Hobbs, N.M., before returning to the Hamlin church in 1986. He served there until his retirement in 2000. He was preceded in death by his granddaughter, Conor Williams. He is survived by his wife of 42 years, Carol Jo; daughters, Amy Hammond and Angela Williams; and five grandchildren.
