Major gift propels UMHB building
___BELTON--The University of Mary Hardin-Baylor has received a major gift commitment from the Frank and Anyse Sue Mayborn Foundation of Temple toward construction of a new student activities and special events center.
___The new facility will be constructed adjacent to the present gymnasium/physical education complex on University Drive at a cost of $14 million. Construction is scheduled to begin in January 2003, and the building will open in August 2004.
___University President Jerry Bawcom said the center will become a "focal point of the campus, pulling together the residential and student life sections, as well as academic areas of the university."
___The new center will provide program space for student health and recreation, the exercise and sports science academic program, collegiate basketball and volleyball games, concerts, convocations and special events.
___The facility will include a new arena, which will seat 2,500 for games and 3,200 for special events; classrooms and laboratories for the academic programs; a new natatorium; a utility/recreation gym; four racquetball courts; an exercise/fitness room; an aerobics room; dressing rooms; and faculty and coaches' offices.
