_bluebull Kenneth Stephens will join the Hardin-Simmons University physics faculty for the coming school year as an assistant professor.

groundbreak
Immanuel Church in Marshall recently broke ground on a new educational wing. The building will include enlarged nursery facilities and classrooms for Sunday School and discipleship programs. Planning Committee members April Nance and Rachel Born did the groundbreaking honors, while committee Chairman Roger Wolfe and members Bill Kilgore and Michael Hallum looked on, along with other church and planning committee members. Carlton Burris is pastor.
___Anniversaries
___bluebull Julie Joiner, fifth, as minister of childhood education at Columbus Avenue Church in Waco May 26.
___bluebull Robert Creech, 15th, as pastor of University Church in Houston June 9.
___bluebull South Hills Church in Fort Worth, 50th, June 22-23. All the church's pastors will be present and take part in the festivites--former pastors Roy Muncy and Walter Reid and current pastor Bob Nickell. The church was called Bethany Church for a short time at its inception. Finger foods will be served at 6 p.m. Saturday, and former staff will participate with their families in a celebration service at 7 p.m. A catered lunch will be served Sunday.
___bluebull First Church in Honey Grove, 160th, June 23. Homecoming services have been planned, with former pastor Greg Faulls preaching in the morning service. A luncheon will follow. Other pastors have been invited to speak in an afternoon service. For more information, call (903) 378-2768. Jim Puckett is intentional interim pastor.
___bluebull Stonewall Church in Stonewall, 10th, June 30. A special anniversary service will begin at 1:30 p.m. The service will feature guest speakers and special music. The church began as a mission of First Church in Fredericksburg. Jimmy Duffy is pastor.

___Events
___bluebull Duane Blakley will be honored for his 25 years as minister of music at First Church in Garland June 30. A reception will be held from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. in the fellowship hall of the activity center to thank Blakley, who will soon join the staff of Barcelona Road Church in Hot Springs, Ark. Both morning services will be patriotic, led by the choir and orchestra. The service will feature arrangements of different patriotic songs and a PowerPoint presentation featuring scenes from New York last Sept. 11. An acapella choral piece, "Alleluia," also will be featured. Pastor Stephen Davis will be the featured soloist during the invitation portion of the service, singing "Bring This Nation Back to God."

___Deaths
___bluebull Gordon Peterson, 87, May 20 in Sebastopol, Calif. He was a pastor for nine years in the Midwest and served as a chaplain in industry for 25 years, including Dearborn Stove Company in Dallas and Texas Aluminum Company in Rockwall. He also was a minister of music for several Dallas churches and for 20 years at First Church in Rockwall. He was preceded in death by his wife, Virginia, in 1971. He is survived by his wife of 30 years, Eunice; sons, John and Bruce; daughter, Kay Peterson; step-daughter, Mary Lou Lennox; five grandchildren; and one great-grandson.
___bluebull Joanna Yinger, 18, May 22 in an automobile accident in Williamson County. She was the daughter of the dean of the School of Education at Baylor University, Robert Yinger. She was a student at Midway High School and active in the youth group of Seventh and James Church in Waco. She is survived by her parents, Robert and Janet Yinger; brothers, Ben and Joel; and grandparents, Bill and Joan Yinger.
___bluebull A.C. Turner, 85, May 25 in Mobile, Ala. Turner was the father of Craig Turner, president of Hardin-Simmons University. A World War II veteran, he worked for Ideal Cement Co. from 1946 until his retirement in 1982. He is survived by his wife of 59 years, Sybil; sons, Craig and Steve; brothers, Gavin and Julius; sister, Mary Joe; four grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.
___bluebull Bob Edwards, 52, May 25 in Minneapolis, Minn., after a two-year battle with cancer. Edwards was born and raised in Dallas and surrendered to a call to ministry at Urban Park Church in Dallas. Prior to moving to Wisconsin to become a pastor, he served as a youth minister at Lakeside Church in Dallas and Woodway Church in Woodway. After serving the Wisconsin church for 10 years, he started a church in Minnesota, where he was pastor for 16 years prior to his death. He is survived by his wife, Karen; sons, John and Mike; parents, Bob and Delores Edwards; and sister, Pam Strickland.
