The meeting was held in conjunction with the annual meeting of the Southern Baptist Convention. ___bluebull Bush disagrees with Vines. President Bush "definitely disagrees" with recent comments about Islam made by Jerry Vines, a former president of the Southern Baptist Convention, the president's spokesman said. "It's something the president definitely disagrees with," White House Press Secretary Ari Fleischer said June 20. "The president has said that Islam is a religion of peace." Fleischer was asked to respond to comments by Vines at the SBC Pastors' Conference, where he said Islam's founder Mohammed was a "demon-possessed pedophile."
___bluebull Vestal disagrees with Vines. Daniel Vestal, coordinator of the Cooperative Baptist Fellowship, issued a statement to the nation's Muslims June 20 expressing his disappointment with comments made by former SBC President Jerry Vines. "As a Baptist Christian who formerly was affiliated with the Southern Baptist Convention, I wish to convey my deepest sorrow and regret over recent statements made by Southern Baptist leaders," Vestal said. "This rhetoric is not in the spirit of Christ, and it negatively affects the mission of the church to the world. To malign or denigrate the historic or current leaders of Islam contradicts our Christian commitment of love for all people."
