Around the state
___bluebull Bill Austin, former chaplain of Baylor University and pastor of several Baptist churches, received the Bishop's Award for exemplary service in the field of ecumenism during the recent Central Texas United Methodist annual conference.
___bluebull Tony Nickel and Malvin Patterson of Texas recently received degrees from Midwestern Seminary in Kansas City, Mo. Nickel received the doctor of ministry degree, and Patterson the master of Christian arts degree.

The celebration will begin Saturday with a float in the Town and Country parade in Hereford portraying the history of the church in the community. Former pastors, music ministers, musicians and deacons attending Sunday services will be honored, as well as descendants of the 14 charter members of the church. A quartet will perform and Gene Streun will lead the singing. A meal will follow in the fellowship hall. Ellis Parson is pastor.
___bluebull First Church in Frisco, 100th, Aug. 14-18. A three-day tent revival will lead up to the Sunday celebration. There will be only one Sunday School that day at 9 a.m. and only one worship service at 10:30 a.m. A dinner will follow in the gym. For more information, call (972) 377-9838.

___Deaths
___bluebull Mark Short, 73, in Alexandria, La., March 20. He served several churches in Arkansas, Kentucky, Oklahoma, Tennessee, Louisiana and Texas in music, education and administrative capacities including South Main Church in Houston. From 1965 to 1966, he was minister of adult education and from 1973 until 1979 he was church administrator and associate pastor. He also was a professor at New Orleans Theological Seminary and was executive director of the Louisiana Baptist Convention from 1987 until his retirement in 1997. He was preceded in death by his sister, Martha Short. He is survived by his wife, Margie; daughter, Marla Morley; sons, Mark III, Marty, Marvin and Marlon; nine grandchildren; and brothers, Frisco and Jimmy.
___bluebull Tommy Eads, 55, June 19 in Winston-Salem, N.C., where he was conducting a teacher training workshop. He is the son-in-law of James Semple, former director of the BGCT's State Missions Commission. He had taught math and technology in North Lamar High School in Paris and local colleges. He also formerly had been organist for two churches and was the long-time announcer of North Lamar High School football games. Eads was a member of East Paris Church in Paris. He was preceded in death by an infant son, Johnathan. He is survived by his wife, JoNel; daughter, Jerica; and sons, Jeremy and Josh.
___bluebull Mays Osborne, 106, June 23 in Plainview. He was a trustee of Wayland University for 32 years, received the school's merit award in 1960 and the Distinguished Benefactor Alumni Award in 1992. He also received the First Families of Baylor University Award from that school in 1988. He joined First Church in Plainview in 1926 and was ordained as a deacon there in 1930. He was preceded in death by three wives--Alma Bennett, Frances Brown and Laura Lee Higginbotham. He and Laura Lee donated the home at Sixth and Milwaukee for the Wayland University president in 1966. He is survived by three daughters; one son; four step-children; 13 grandchildren and 26 great-grandchildren.
___bluebull Jason Ranton, 32, July 6 in Plano. He was a former Baylor University faculty member and First Church in Waco organist. He was organist at Christ Church in Plano at the time of his death. He taught copy editing in the journalism department at Baylor and was general manager of student publications. He left Baylor in 2001 to become director of communications at the Plano church. He recently had been the featured organist in worship sessions at the Cooperative Baptist Fellowship held in Fort Worth June 27-29.

___Events
___bluebull Edgefield Church in Waco held its final services June 22. Former pastors and Paul Stripling spoke at the church's final homecoming service. The church began in 1890 as a mission of First Church in Waco and constituted as a church in 1917. Located in the shadow of Baylor University, the school has purchased the property. Dan McGee was interim pastor.
