___ ETBU taps Bunyard. Magen Bunyard has joined the staff of East Texas Baptist University as director of student activities. She moves from Texas A&M University in Corpus Christi, where she has been associate director of the Baptist Student Ministry. She earned the bachelor
of science degree in speech communication and sociology from Stephen F. Austin State University.
___ Auvenshine named vice president at HPU. Donnie Auvenshine, dean of the School of Christian Studies, has been named vice president for academic affairs at Howard Payne University. Auvenshine has served on the faculty since moving from Hardin-Simmons University in 1993. Born in Comanche, he grew up in Abilene and Odessa and graduated from Odessa Permian High School. Auvenshine majored in practical theology at Howard Payne, earning the bachelor of arts degree in 1975. He earned the master of divinity and doctor of philosophy degrees at Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary. From 1972 to 1986, Auvenshine served as pastor of churches in DeLeon, Comanche, Odessa and Iraan. During the coming academic year, Auvenshine will have dual responsibilities as vice president for academic affairs and dean of the School of Christian Studies.
___ Truck donated to Texas Men. The McLane Co. has donated a semi-tractor to Texas Baptist Men for disaster relief. The tractor, which already has made a trip to Arizona and currently is hauling food in San Antonio, has provided families in the devastated areas with an estimated 50,000 meals. "The timing of this is another of God's miracles," said Bill Arnold, president of the Texas Baptist Missions Foundation. "We couldn't have ministered to both the fires and the floods as we have without it."
___ Buckner seeks volunteers. Buckner Orphan Care International is seeking volunteers to travel overseas to help distribute shoes collected through
the Shoes for Orphan Souls campaign. Volunteers typically visit orphanages and hold Vacation Bible School-like programs. The groups also deliver medicine, toys and donated shoes to orphans. They will meet and minister to the children who will receive the donated shoes. A trip to China is scheduled for Oct. 10-22, while trips to Russia and Romania are scheduled for Nov. 7-17 and Jan. 2-12, respectively. ___ See You at the Pole date set. Wednesday, Sept. 18, is the date for this year's See You at the Pole emphasis nationwide. At 7 a.m., students are encouraged to gather around their school flagpoles for prayer. During the past 12 years, millions of young people have lifted voices, bended knees and joined hands to pray for their schools through the effort, which began in Texas. "Oh, that you would burst from the heavens and come down" is the 2002 theme, taken from Isaiah 64:1-2. Everything necessary for students to plan and promote a successful prayer emphasis is available free at www.syatp.com.
___ Two Texas hospitals ranked among best. Baptist St. Anthony's Health System in Amarillo and Baylor Medical Center in Dallas have been ranked among the nation's top 205 medical centers by U.S. News & World Report in its July 22 issue. Additionally, both Texas Baptist hospitals were ranked among the top 50 in the nation for cancer treatment.
