___Deaths
___ Charles Pitts, 85, president who led Dallas Baptist University in the transition from junior college to accredited four-year college, July 19 in Dallas. Pitts was a DBU trustee when the school moved from Decatur to Dallas in 1965 and later served as president of what then was Dallas Baptist College from 1967 to 1974. A native of Johnson County, Pitts was involved in the oil and gas business before he joined DBU. He also was interim pastor of Texas Baptist churches, including Highland Church in Dallas, First Church in Cleburne and First Church in Laredo. Pitts was a graduate of Howard Payne University and Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary. He is survived by his wife, Johnnie Lee; brother, Groner; and numerous nieces and nephews.
___ Mabel Ann Criswell, 63, daughter of legendary Texas pastor W.A. Criswell, July 20 in Dallas. A noted singer, she recorded an album with writer/conducter Ralph Carmichael. She spent much of the past decade working on the Legacy Project, a compilation of the sermons and writings of her father, longtime pastor of First Church in Dallas. More thn 2,000 sermons are available in print, audio and video formats on the Internet at www.wacriswell.com. She attended Baylor University. She is survived by her mother, Betty Criswell; sons, Cris Criswell and Paul Daniel Jackson; and five grandchildren. Memorials may be made to the Criswell Foundation, P.O. Box 710296, Dallas 75371.
___ Burley Cader, 79, a retired missionary to Brazil, July 16 in Pensacola. Fla. Cader and his wife, Ulene, were appointed by the Southern Baptist Foreign Mission Board (now International Mission Board) in 1951. During 36 years of missionary service, he helped start more than 200 churches. He began as a general evangelist and became executive director of the Bahia State Baptist Convention. He was a graduate of Louisiana College and Southwestern Seminary. Before appointment, he was pastor of Graham Point Church in Royse City, as well as a church in Louisiana. He is survived by his wife; two sons, David and Cabral; three daughters, Licia McCoy, Debbie Jan Cader and Querubina Dourado; 14 grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; and one great-great grandchild.
___ Virgil Colson, 83, a retired missionary to Liberia, July 22 in Jacksonville, Fla. Colson and his wife, Grace, were appointed by the Foreign Mission Board in 1978, and he was a chaplain and Bible teacher at the Ricks Institute in Monrovia. He is a graduate of Southwestern Seminary and taught at Buckner Academy in Dallas. He also was pastor of churches in North Carolina, California and Hawaii. He is survived by his wife; three sons, Charles, John and Carey; and six grandchildren.
___ Leland James Harper, 81, a retired missionary to Paraguay, July 19 in Ironton, Mo. He and his wife, Helen Elizabeth, were appointed by the Foreign Mission Board to Paraguay in 1950. A physician, Harper was a hospital administrator in Asuncion for 25 years. Later, he served as business administrator for the Baptist missionaries in the country. He was a graduate of Baylor University and Southwestern Seminary and was a pilot in the U. S. Air Force. He also was a home missionary in Missouri and music and educational director for Southern Crest Church in Dallas. He is survived by his wife; three sons, James, William and Charles; 10 grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.
