Bivocationals cross cultures
___BELTON--Texas Baptist bivocational ministers focused on intercultural ministry during their 16th annual conference, held July 12-14 at the University of Mary Hardin-Baylor.
___"Oneness in Action" was the theme of the conference, attended by 250 ministers and family members.
___Patty Lane, director of intercultural initiatives with the Baptist General Convention of Texas, offered insights on intercultural ministry and moderated a panel discussion.
___Other speakers included Terrell Thomas, associate pastor of Whole Life Christian Baptist Church in San Antonio; Dennis Webb, pastor of Bear Creek Baptist Church in Irving; and Tony Tawater, pastor of Lone Willow Baptist Church in Cleburne.
___Participants also attended 26 breakout sessions for pastors, musicians, youth workers, Hispanic ministers and women's ministries. Topics ranged from time management to counseling, to using drama in worship and biblical help for stress among ministers' wives.
___Two exemplary bivocational ministers were honored during the three-day conference. Charles Lavine and his wife, Anne, were named this year's Claud and Alline Slate Exemplary Bivocational Pastor and Wife of Texas. Lavine is pastor of Terrace Acres Baptist Church in Fort Worth.
___Nita Stewart was named Texas 2002 Exemplary Bivocational Minister of Music. She is ministry assistant at Crestview Baptist Church in Dallas. Her responsibilities include worship planning and children's ministries.
___On Saturday evening, participants presented a concert and heard a patriotic musical presentation led by Tom Owen, pastor of Rockland Baptist Church in Woodville.
___Music leaders for the conference included Richard Ray, pastor of Living Faith Baptist Church in Buffalo; Henry Goodson, minister of music at College Avenue Baptist Church in Fort Worth; and Paul Reavis, minister of music at First Baptist Church of Live Oak in San Antonio.
___Officers elected include President Bob Ray, pastor of Fairy Baptist Church in Fairy; First Vice President David Keith, pastor of Carlton Baptist Church in Carlton; Second Vice President Mike Barrera, pastor of United Baptist Church in Laredo; Secretary Rosalind Ray, music minister at Fairy Baptist Church in Fairy; and Treasurer Tom Echols, pastor of Eagles Wings Baptist Church in Crowley.
