Perry visited Victoria to announce the region had been declared a federal disaster area due to flooding. Texas Baptist Men have served at First Baptist Church for two weeks, preparing 11,000 meals by the time of Perry's visit. The volunteers "have been an extreme blessing to our area," Shamburger said. "Their effort describes what Texas Baptists are." |

___ Hall joins DBU staff. Roger Hall, who recently retired as treasurer of the Baptist General Convention of Texas, has been named chief financial officer and vice president for financial affairs at Dallas Baptist University. Hall served 19 years with the BGCT and has previous experience in higher education administration. He is a member of First Baptist Church in Midlothian.
___ Hicks scholarship established at HSU. The Ethel Hicks Endowed Scholarship has been established at Hardin-Simmons University to aid students from Hendrick Home for Children or Ben Richey Boys Ranch. The scholarship is named for a former dorm director in HSU's Blanche Lange Hall who also served as a dorm director at Wayland Baptist University. Claude Hicks, retired president of Hendrick Home for Children, established the endowment in honor of his mother, who died Aug. 9.
___ Brunson to speak at DBU; Pilgrim honored. Dallas Baptist University's summer commencement will feature an address by Mac Brunson, pastor of First Baptist Church of Dallas, and the awarding of an honorary doctorate to Bo Pilgrim, chairman of Pilgrim's Pride. Undergraduate and graduate degrees will be awarded to 220 students at the 10 a.m. ceremony Aug. 9 on the DBU campus.
___ HBU gets two major gifts. Houston Baptist University has reported two new major gifts. The Joella and Stewart Morris Foundation has pledged $250,000 for the university's College of Nursing. Also, the estate of Grace Reba Mastro has provided $175,000 toward endowment for the Cultural Arts Center.
___ Counselor training coming for Graham event. Christians in North Texas are invited to attend four weeks of witness training sponsored by the Billy Graham Evangelistic Association beginning Aug. 19 at locations across the Metroplex. Those who attend the sessions may qualify to serve as counselors at Graham's Metroplex Mission at Texas Stadium in October. Participants do not have to commit to be counselors in order to attend the training. For dates and locations, visit the event website at www.metroplexmission.org.
