Around the state
___ Hispanic Baptist Theological School has had a number of recent personnel additions. Charles Wedge has become chief financial officer and general counsel; Val Martinez, director of the language and literacy program; Sandee Elizondo, advancement assistant; Linda Ramos, accounting assistant; and Aidsa Zambrano, assistant registrar.

MORE THAN 600 people recently attended the 50th anniversary celebration of South Hills Church in Fort Worth. The church has had only three pastors-- Walter Reid, 39 years; Roy Muncy, three years; and current pastor Robert Nickell, eight years.
Baptist Theological School has two new faculty members. Mario Ramos, former pastor of Harlandale Church in San Antonio and a Texas pastor for the past 15 years, has become assistant professor of biblical/ theological studies. Nora Lozano, ministry leader, educator and conference leader in Mexico and the United States for the past 15 years, also joins the biblical/theological studies department as an assistant professor.

___ Children attending Vacation Bible School at Perryville Church in Winnsboro gave $400 that was sent to the Shoebox Ministry of Samaritan's Purse. Boxes covered in white paper and then decorated by the children also were sent. The boxes contained not only gifts for underprivileged children, but notes and photos from their VBS friends as well. ___ The Heights Church in Richardson held dedication ceremonies for its new Family Life Center Aug. 18. The 8,500-square-foot facility features a regulation-sized basketball court, volleyball court and other recreational activities. It also will provide the church with additional banquet and worship space. Gary Singleton is pastor.
___ First Church in Granbury broke ground for a preschool/ children's building Aug. 18.
___ Central Church in Odessa will honor Vaughny Taylor for 18 years of music ministry Sept. 1. David Johnson is pastor.
___ Cliff Temple Church in Dallas is honoring Bud Lovell with a testimonial dinner at the Radisson Hotel Sept. 6 at 7 p.m. Tickets are $25 each. Tickets may be purchased by mailing a check payable to the church to 125 Sunset, Dallas 75208. The church also will hold "Bud Day" Sept. 8 in honor of Lovell's 30 years of service as minister of music. For more information, call (214) 942-8601. Glen Schmucker is pastor.
___ Gary McSpadden will be in concert at First Church in Athens Sept. 8 at 6 p.m. A love offering will be taken. Kyle Henderson is pastor.
___ Ash Creek Church in Azle will hold dedication services and an open house Sept. 8 in conjunction with the opening of its new sanctuary. Wesley Shotwell is pastor.

___Anniversaries
___ Tommy Pophin, fifth, as pastor of Eastridge Church in Mineral Wells.
___ Pleasant Valley Church in Amarillo, 50th, Sept. 15. Services will be held at the church followed by a picnic at Thompson Park. Dana Moore is pastor.

___Retiring
___ Marion Harris, after 15 years as pastor of New Colony Church in Linden and 56 years of ministry. Other churches where he was pastor include Live Oak Church in Gatesville and First churches in Devers, Mineola, Marshall and Jefferson. He also has been interim pastor of numerous East Texas churches. He is president of an evangelistic association he founded and will continue his daily radio ministry that began 30 years ago. He and his wife, Eleanor, live in Jefferson.

___Deaths
___ George Butler, 88, March 10. Born in San Marcos, Butler had student pastorates in Turnersville and Cameron and aslo was pastor of Elmwood Church in Abilene. The majority of his ministry was spent in California. He was preceded in death by his wife, Ruth. He is survived by his second wife, Lila Fae; daughters, Nancy and Carol; son, Bill; stepson, Bruce Langford; and two grandchildren.
___ Ed Jackson, 81, Aug. 7 in Abilene. Jackson was the retired assistant to the president at Hardin-Simmons University and a former Texas Baptist pastor. Jackson joined the university's speech communication faculty in 1968, coming from the pastorate of First Southern Church of Pearl Harbor in Honolulu. He held various positions at the school including assistant professor of speech communication, chief admissions officer, dean of continuing education, director of church relations and assistant to the president. He was a pastor 16 years. In addition to the Hawaii church, he was pastor of First Church in Rising Star and First Church in Shallowater. He continued in the field of education as a professor at Cisco Junior College until 2001 after retiring from HSU in 1989. He is survived by his wife, Doris; son, Dick; brother, Donald; three grandsons; and three great-grandchildren.
