Baptist Briefs
___ Evans to edit devotional. Jim Evans of Montevallo, Ala., has been named editor of "Reflections," a daily devotional guide produced by Smyth & Helwys Publishing. Evans has served the Crosscreek Baptist Church in Pelham, Ala., as pastor since 1997. He also has been pastor of churches in Selma and Atmore, Ala., as well as in Benson, N.C.
___ English teachers needed. Native English speakers are needed for two positions at Hulunbuire College in Hailaer, Inner Mogolia,
JERRY FALWELL
China, for this fall. The college is located about 120 miles from Russia in northern China. A degree is needed, but not necessarily in English. "This is an opportunity for called Christians to be an example of Christ's love by teaching English in the classroom, while obeying all of the laws of China," said David Wilson, coordinator of volunteer opportunities in China for the Cooperative Baptist Fellowship. "This is a very harsh area for service as the temperature will go to -50 Celsius in the winter time and snow will be about 9 feet deep." Room, utilities, bicycle, computer and telephone are provided. Pay is about $400 per month, with airfare covered if one teaches for a full year. Shorter terms also are available. For more information, send e-mail to david.ann.wilson@centurytel.net.
___ Annuity Board medical rates to rise. Premium rates for medical insurance plans through the Southern Baptist Convention's Annuity Board will increase significantly Jan. 1, following a national trend. Annuity Board officials said the increases are fueled by increases in prescription drug costs, health-care provider expenses, consumer demand and government regulation. Under the new rate schedule, a participant who currently pays $600 per month for level one family coverage will pay $810. However, the Annuity Board also has unveiled a new, lower-cost alternative with higher copays and deductibles. The same employee would pay $446 per month in the new plan.
___ Falwell urges NAMB to the basics. Televangelist and Virginia pastor Jerry Falwell preached to staff members of the Southern Baptist Convention's North American Mission Board Aug. 8. Falwell, pastor of Thomas Road Baptist Church in Lynchburg, Va., and chancellor of Liberty University, said the basic teaching of the Bible too often gets neglected today. "We've got to fill the minds of the children, the adolescents, the adults with the facts of the gospel, the facts of the divinity of Christ, the facts of the inerrancy of Scripture, the facts of biblical morality and decency, world evangelism," he urged. "And then by the preaching of the word of God, that teaching is driven south to the heart, where regeneration, where fire occurs."
