___ HSU first in state for degree. Hardin-Simmons University has become the first Texas university to offer a doctorate in physical therapy. The Baptist university in Abilene recently received accreditation for the degree from the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools. The physical therapy department has been working 18 months to transition from a master's-level program to the doctoral-level program. The HSU doctorate also has been approved by the Commission on Accreditation of Physical Therapy Education. The curriculum consists of 118 credit hours completed over seven semesters.
___ Curry & Mercer to speak in Kerrville. Dayna Curry and Heather Mercer will speak at Trinity Baptist Church in Kerrville Aug. 11 at 6 p.m. They will share their story of captivity and release in Afghanistan.
___ HBU will offer counseling degree. This fall, Houston Baptist University will launch a new master of arts in Christian counseling degree. The degree will train students in general counseling but allow electives for a counseling specialty if desired. Graduates may seek Texas state licensure as a licensed professional counselor.
___ Texan named national chaplain of year. The National Sheriffs' Association has named Harold Ellis of Belton chaplain of the year. Ellis, a member of First Baptist Church of Belton, is founder and executive director of JAIL Ministry, which is partially funded through the Center for Community Ministries of the Baptist General Convention of Texas and receives support through the Mary Hill Davis Offering for Texas missions. JAIL is an acronym that stands for Jesus Acts in Inmates Lives. It is a faith-based ministry working with churches, law enforcement, government, school systems, corporations and individuals to "bring restoration through Jesus Christ" to the lives of inmates and others affected by crime.
___ River Ministry CD available. The Baptist General Convention of Texas River Ministry is among missions work featured in promotional materials for this year's Mary Hill Davis Offering for Texas missions. In conjunction with the offering emphasis, a CD has been created to provide eight Powerpoint presentations in English and two in Spanish, as well as 75 pages of printable resources for church mission groups. The CD also contains 50 photos and logos. The CD may be ordered by calling (888) 333-2363 or emailing sena@bgct.org. There is a $5 charge for shipping and handling.
___ Students invited to "ignite the flame" for Graham crusade. Youth and youth groups from across North Texas are invited to participate in an "Ignite the Flame" rally at Texas Stadium Aug. 11 from 2 to 4 p.m. The rally is intended to inspire participation in the Oct. 17-20 Metroplex Mission with Billy Graham. The rally will feature music by the Austin band Salvador and a motivational message by Billy Graham associate Ron Hutchcraft. Students will conclude the rally by surrounding the stadium in a time of prayer. The event is free, but an offering will be taken.
___ Baylor museum ranks high. Baylor University's Moen Discovery Center has been ranked the 29th best children's museum in the United States by Child magazine and the Association of Children's Museums. The only Texas museum to rank ahead of Baylor's facility was the Children's Museum of Houston, which ranked second in the nation. Baylor's hands-on children's museum is located in downtown Waco but will move to a new facility on campus in 2004.
___ Hillcrest gets some satisfaction. Hillcrest Baptist Medical Center in Waco ranked in the 93rd percentile of all U.S. hospitals for patient satisfaction this year in an annual survey by Press, Ganey Associates. The survey encompassed patients in 800 hospitals. The ranking places Hillcrest in the top 7 percent of hospitals for patient satisfaction.
